Moulin Rouge... is it worth the time & money?
I will be in Paris for 4 days arriving on Dec 25th. My friend I am traveling with wants to see the Moulin Rouge Show the night we arrive. We are anticiapting not much being open Christmas night. The cost is 89euro (with out dinner) This seems expensive. Has anyone seen it? Is it worth the time and money? (note: We are in our 30's and are big fans of broadway!) Thanks...

Maybe you should go see "Cabaret" at the Folies Bergère instead. It is playing at least through the end of January.

Have a look at the paintings from Toulouse-Lautrec which were based on the Moulin Rouge. You will learn a lot of history when you see the girls dancing.
Visit the Musee d'Orsay and you can see the paintings too.
It was a few years back when I visited but I would spend todays Euros and it would still be a bargain.

I've seen it...I thought the production values and the costumes were pretty good. I did not have the meal.
It is definitely the prototype of a lot of Vegas-style shows anbd has been around long before Vegas was a thought in Bugsy's mind.
Worth it? That's hard to say. I keep hearing the meal is mediocre. This is one place where i actually saw them turn away some people in line who were wearing shorts.
It isn't located in the most prettified "I adore the Rue Cler" neighborhood
This topic has been battled about on here before and we've heard a lot about "that knind of show" from those who wouldn't be caught dead there to malicious remarks about the horrid Japanese tourists whose money apparently stinks.

Is it open XMAS day? I'd be leery of doing anything that involves "attention" on my first night in Paris, due to jet lag.
I've been to the Paradis Latin as part of a tour group. IMHO, OK to do once, but I'm not planning to go back. If you do go, I'd plan on eating elsewhere and just going for the show.

It is expensive, any tourist show like that is going to be expensive as that's how they make their money. Las Vegas is expensive, also.
If your friend wants to go, why not, just don't expect anything but to have fun with your friend. If it is really open on Christmas, there's probably not going to be much else to do anyway, so why not. I hate those kind of things, but I'd go with a friend if they really wanted to. I just wouldn't expect the show itself to be "worth it", just something to do for fun with a friend.

I like Christina's advice. Heck, it's Christmas, it's Paris, you're traveling with your friend, you haven't slept since yesterday on another continent (I'm assuming that part, but even if not...), you'll have a great time whatever you do.
Once in Chicago in 1973 I went to see roller derby with my friends and had a great time. I'd go pretty much anywhere to have fun with a friend.

Yes this question gets polar opposite answers.
I still vote for going once in your life, it is a nice show, entertaining and basically in a historical setting.
And your friend wants to and it will be Christmas! Make it a gift of your presence.

The movie of Cabaret is not a good thing to watch if you want to understand the stage musical in another language. There are a lot of differences, starting with where Sally Bowles and Cliff are from.
Friends recently asked me if we had ever seen the show at Moulin Rouge. They are major travelers and have been to Paris several times and are also avid theatre people. But this year for the first time they went to the Moulin Rouge and absolutely loved it (they went to the late show -- no food). They are totally raving about it as the "best thing we've ever done in Paris".

Thank you all for your great comments. My friend really does want to see this show and we already decided not to get the meal (partly to save $$ and partly b/c we won't want to eat that late(we are picky eaters.)) It actually is open Christmas night, according to the web site the 9pm show is already sold out. I am concerned about the neighborhood and taking public transportation after 1am considering jet lag and it being our first night and not having any experience w/ the metro. It looks like we will need to change metro trains. (note: we are staying in the Latin Quarter).

We booked a night tour which included the admittance to the Moulin Rouge. First we toured around Paris on a bus to see the lights at night and then they dropped us off right in front of the auditorium, got our tickets, positioned us in line and picked us up after the show, dropped us off at our hotels.
I will go back to my trip report and tell you which company, it actually came out less expensive than booking the show on our own.
The offices are right on Rue du Rivoli. I recommend that way if you don't want to take a cab or go it on your own.
