It's been 10 years since I stayed here, but the views from Hotel Dania on Via Capo were absolutely breathtaking. Out one window is Vesuvius, out a second window is Naples/Bay of Naples, and out the third window are olive groves, lemon groves, and a beach (okay, the sight of porta-potties at the beach left something to be desired...). Google Earth the place and look for a line of porta-potties on a breakwater at a beach, to the west of Sorrento.

The hotel is about a 3 minute walk from the end of the Sorrento city bus route that goes up from Piazza Italia to the Via Capo. I have no idea how much it was/is unfortunately.

There is a fairly good staircase/sidewalk that leads from the city of Sorrento to the port. We didn't take a taxi/bus, but it did take a lot longer than it looks like it would on a map.

Hotel Minerva Sorrento is a great place with a great terrace and view. It should fit your price range. There is a "Rick Steves" rate that saves a little money with his book.

thanks everybody. I ended up with reservations in room 105 of the villa garden hotel. I'll definitely report back with photos.

Oh wow, you got "the room"!
It has a large terrace and such a pretty view. We had requested it but got room 205 instead (they let us know at the time of booking). We met the couple who stayed in room 105. They were celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary and certainly deserved it. A lovely couple from Scotland.
