We will be there Sept 6 snd staying in an apt from moscowsuites.ru. If you go to their site you can see on the left hand side the apts and where they are on the map and take note that they are right next to Metro stations. Although we have not stayed there yet our communication with the staff has been outstanding, cooperative and extremely helpful.

Not sure of your price range, but for just two days would advise strongly to stay in central area, near to places you want to see (I'm assuming). If you have any sightseeing on your list which is further out of the centre, ie too far to walk, the Metro is easy enough to navigate if you memorise the Cyrillic letters of your stop(s), look at a map of it before you get on the train and stop to marvel at the interiors of some of the stops (just not in the middle of peak hour though!).
The "central area" I'm referring to is the chunk bordered by the streets of Nikitskaya ulitsa, Dmitroka ulitsa either side then as far up as Pushkin Square and down to the Kremlin/Red Square area. There are quite a few hotels to be found in this section, of varying prices too, but know that Moscow accommodation isn't cheap. Try Assemblya Nikitskaya (www.assambleya-hotels.ru) or the Marriott Tverskaya. The Metropole, if it's in your price range, is also central in the Theatre district.
Have you got your visa already?

Nope, not familiar with it in the sense of staying there, but location-wise know where it is. If you're coming from St P by train, it's right at the station so convenient for that. But to get to the Kremlin/Red Square area, it would take almost an hour (I'm guessing) to walk so Metro would be the way.

You have plenty of choice within easy distance of the Kremlin/Red Square. Baltschug Kempinski for instance is south of Red Square and across a bridge but is perfectly positioned and has some rooms facing St Basil's.
Hotel Kadashevskaya which is also south of Red Square and a 10 min walk, Radisson Slavyanskaya is near Kievskaya station and easy metro ride to the centre or walk to Arbatskaya and walk to Red Square. It's not the greatest of hotels but perfectly ok.
The Hilton is about 20-30mins walking distance to the centre however there are 2 metro stations near it. One of those is Komsomolskaya station which is one of the most famous ornate stations. I've stayed several times before the renovation. It feels far out but as long as you are near a metro you can reach the main sites easily.

Hi,
I spent more than one year in Moscow for a work assignment.
I used both Metropol and Hilton (and some other hotels).
I think that for a two days stay Metropol it's a perfect choice both for its historical building and more for its location very, very close to Red Square & all "central" touristic opportunities. From there you ca easily walk..., from Hilton (not very far) you have to use the metro.
Ciao,
Gianni (Milan, Italy)

Hotel Milan Otel.com for me from $130 or so.
ichotelgroup.com good priority club deals on Holiday Inns there
good price points and cash/point deals
Hilton is nice join HHonors program/card for upgrades/discounts
