In 2003 we stayed at the Byzantino and was very pleased with it. The rooms are all unique because they in old buildings. My Dad had a room with no balcony that was right above the check in area it was very cute but the negative was you almost had to climb a ladder to get in. Our room was in a seperate building and was huge as was our balcony we could have a cocktail party out there. The bathroom however was quite small, the one in my Dad's room was larger.

We also stayed in the Byzantino, last May. I would say the hotel had lots of character rather than luxury. I think there was air conditioning (it was early May, so we didn't need it) but I would agree that the bathrooms are very small and basic. Check out www.yourgreece.gr for this and other options in Momenvassia.

This is my trip report for our visit, with a link to some pictures:

Stayed at Byzantino in May 2006, was somewhat disappointed with the room, especially at the cost (over 140 Euro). Bathroom was very small, water pressure marginal, and couldnt get the temperature any warmer than "tepid".

No doubt these issues are related to the challenges of retrofitting into architecturally sensitive, 500 year old buildings.

While the Byzantino was not "luxurious", being able to sleep inside the walls of the ancient town was a treat.

Try the Flower of Monemvasia hotel.

Stayed there in September of 2006 and it was very nice. Had a room on the upper level with a balcony which had a terrific view of the island and the old Castle town of Monemvasia. It is very close to the causeway road which goes right to the gate of the fortress.

We too stayed at Byzantino. What you have to realize is Byzantino is not a traditional hotel. It is several rooms spread out around the city. Each room is individual and reflects the character of a 15th century Venetian walled city. Our room looked out over the bell tower and the ocean. It had a fireplace and a gun port in the bathroom. As you can tell from everyone's description of their rooms they are all different.
When you arrive in the city find the main desk and ask to see several rooms and pick the one that catches your imagination.
