My wife and I will be taking a day trip (via train) to Monaco from Nice. We want to go to the Casino to check out the glitz and glamour!!

Is it true that they don't let you in unless you're dressed up (i.e. tie and jacket for men)??

We don't want to be dressed up all day while sightseeing. Any suggestions??

Also, any suggestions on our itinerary for the day???

Yes - jacket and tie - and equivalent dress for women - is required. Entrance is 10 euros to the public rooms - slots and roulette.

The private rooms (generally high stakes only) also have 21 etc.

Later in the evning dress can be quite formal (think James Bond) in the private rooms.

True, at the Grand Casino no tennis shoes, no jeans, no shorts, but a more formal dress code is required (jacket and tie for men, dresses for women). However there are other casinos in Monte Carlo, that don't have such a strict code and cater more to tourists that don't want to dress up, this is what I have heard.
Visit Monte Carlo and I would take a bus from there and visit the enchanting village of Eze which is about 10 km (5 miles) from Monte Carlo. Gorgeous views.

I'm not going to Monaco anytime soon, but in order to help the OP I will ask the following question. Is a passport required to get into the casinos in Monaco? I've only been to a few European casinos, and those all required passports.

We had a great trip to Provence and the south of France, but the one thing I would not repeat is the trip to the Casino in Monte Carlo. All the beautiful things to see within 100 miles, and to spend 10E just to get in to a room to lose more money! I thought the whole thing a bit tacky, but I'm not a big fan of gambling. Unless you are really into gambling, please consider spending your day doing something else, you have many beautiful options surrounding you.

There's a (few) casinos in Nice if you want to gamble... no need to go to MC. But if you want to see what the big deal is, you need a jacket & tie and women appropriately attired. You'll probably be disappointed if you can't get into the high-roller private rooms (a la James Bond).

An alternative here is the Monte Carlo Grand (formerly the Loew's) where there is no dress code, and, thankfully, not as tacky as Las Vegas.

If you want to go to Monaco then do so...but after you have VIEWED the "grand" one that requires an entrance fee and has a dress code, go across the plaza to the "tourist" one where they do the same thing they do at the grand without the formality...that is, TAKE your money...it is great fun.

As to the so-called "tackiness" of Las Vegas...perhaps people less tacky when they are required to PAY to lost their money and they have to dress up to do so as well..to each their own.

Can I make a day trip from Nice in the morning, pop into 1 or 2 casinos for 30 mins each just to take a look, and go to EZE and get back to NIce for the night view ?
How long do I need to stay in EZE to enjoy the full of it ? Can I get a train back direct from Eze to Nice ?

We stayed in Nice several days in May. We areally enjoyed the area but hubby did want to see Monaco and The "Grand one"! We did enjoy Monaco and in my opinion is worth a day trip at least. We did not go into the "grand casino" because we did not want to dress up. We did go to the other casino next door and hubby spend a few $$$. If that is your thing enjoy! Monaco is a nice area to walk in and see the sights. Great view from the Palace area! I would go back in a heartbeat. In fact I have a photo of Monaco harbor as a screen saver now.

I forgot to mention that we took the bus from Nice to Monaco and back. It was very easy and took less than an hour. The views along the way were great!

It's my understanding there are only 2 casinos, the fancy one and the not so fancy one. Monaco is fun to see and the Le Grand Hotel is amazing. Go inside. Try to dress reasonably nicely and you'll get to see more.

You can't do Monte Carlo, Cannes and Eze all in 1 day. Well, it's doable I suppose but you wouldn't see much. The palace, the aquarium and the casino are the major sites in Monaco.

The town of Eze is up a steep mountain and the train station is at the bottom at Eze sur Mer. So you'd need a taxi, bus or a long hike to get up there from the train station. Cannes is west of Nice.

The train ride from Nice to Monaco is fabulous. The train tracks actually go much closer to the sea than the road. If you're sitting on the right side of the train you'll be looking down into pools and villas set into the cliffs.

Cannes is indeed a popular tourist spot--because it's interesting. It also has a casino; so you could combines sightseeing with seeing a casino all in one day.

It was my husbands experience that he was not allowed to go in without his passport. He walked back to the hotel to get it. I didn't go, because I did not have the proper attire. He wore a sport coat, I'm not sure about a tie. The casino's are not like those in the US, they are quiet and subdued. Anyone making a lot of noise is marked as a tourist. (Not that that is a bad thing.) Have fun, but to blend in be quiet.
