Hi janecg, well my favorite hotel near the Duomo is no longer there unfortantly. A Fodorite checked for me and it is now a clothing store. That made me mad, lol!

But a restaurant that you might enjoy it the Ristorante Mercante. It is located in the Pizatta Mercanti..the street is di Corrado Romanini and is in the area of the Duomo. Their website is www.ristorantealmercante.it if you want to check it out. We walked to it from our hotel.

There is another restaurant I love but it is much more expensive. It is also in the area. I can't think of the name of it right now but when I do I will post back.

I stayed at the Hotel Scala, next to the Scala. I had lunch outside (hotel food)alfresco.

Good food and great hotel. Not sure if it's still there.

We'll be staying at Hotel Star in Milan next month (also for one night) at 159 euros for a double (175 euros if we had wanted the hydromassage bathtub). This will be our first stay there, so I can't give you a personal review, but the hotel received decent reviews on Tripadvisor, etc. I don't think it has a high charm factor but is more of a businessman's hotel.

You will love it...I did!

Try and check out the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, which is just around the corner on the way to the Duomo...

And be sure to stop by Peck, also on the way.

Hi blackduff, it sounds like the hotel you enjoyed is the one I always enjoyed, the hotel when facing the Scala Opera House was across the narrow street from the the Opera House on the left hand side. Mariano alla Scala Hotel.

A Fodorite checked this out for me a couple of years ago and said the hotel no longer exsist. At that time the street level was a mens clothing store.

This was the first time I drove into Milano. I tried to find a parking spot and the restaurant was right in front. I stopped for lunch, saw the hotel and signed up and discovered the Scala Milan nextdoor.

Of course the Doumo and the gallerie too. What a good spot.

Things change! Not always for the good.
