Manchester: No bloody clue what to do. And a sidetrip to York.

I'm sorry I have to disagree with Morgana re Castle Howard. I know she lives in the area but I also think that depending on how much detail you want you could still "do" Castle Howard adequately and that walled garden in a full half day.
I suppose ultimately it would depend a lot on you, what is important to you, etc.
When we visited we did not linger in each and every room because, frankly, we didn't find each and every room worth lingering over. Some sections such as the chapel with those magnificent pre-Raphaelite windows I could have "lingered over" for months!
Whatever your final decision I hope you have a great trip.

We just got back from two nights in York and York is definitely worth seeing. We covered a lot in just one day. You can check out our trip report and scroll down to the York portion.
Basically we started the day at the Minster, went to the Castle Museum and then the Railway museum in the afternoon. The museum opens at 10 and closes at 6PM so you can visit later in the day too and take the train back after 6PM.
We took the Voluntary Guides walking tour of York the day before and really enjoyed it. We also walked the walls which I recommend to do even for a small part.
We never did make it over to Betty's so that will have to wait for next time! We didn't do the Jorvik Viking Centre either this time.
York is rather compact and you can cover quite a bit in a day. Enjoy!

It was all fine, and actually better and more interesting than expected.
The hotel was less dated than expected, very impressive building. Unfortunately, there is also a nightclub or disco somewhere in the same building, so it may be an issue for those who have a light sleep - which I don't.
Manchester was extremely interesting.. A mix of old and new that gave it a pretty vibrant atmosphere.
And the folks there were also extremely nice and helpful.
I am currently travelling again, so I have to postpone my real trip report till I get back in early October.
Sorry, but I can't type too well on this virtual iPad keyboard..
