Mallaig Ferry

I'm planning to go to Skye via the Mallaig ferry but when I checked the website, they only cross early am and late afternoon, which means I should find lodging in/near Mallaig. After searching, most posters are negative on staying overnight in Mallaig. What other options are there? Thanks.

We stayed at a wonderful B&B in Strontian - remember the place and hostess but not the name - and then drove over wonderful coastal scenery to Mallaig. We then took the afternoon ferry (depending on the season, you should make a reservation) and spent the next night in Portree. A memorable day!

The ferry is more frequent in summer: in winter, one ship combines the Mallaig-Armadale service with the service to the islands of Eigg, Muck, Rum and Canna; in summer, there is one ship dedicated to Mallaig-Armadale. If you need to stay a night, there is nothing wrong with Mallaig but it is just a small fishing port. If you are there out of season, you shouldn't have a problem finding accommodation anywhere; in summer, places fill up quickly.

When are you going? As GeoffHamer says - it runs much more frequently after Easter and by summer it has many sailings all day long.

The Cal Mac website only shows the current schedule.

As the others have said, after 1st April it increases to roughly every half hour.

If you decide you want to stay nearby, try Morar, or, better, Arisaig. Strontian is lovely but it's not close to Mallaig

Hi - We visited Mallaig last October and stayed at a B & B (http://www.road-to-the-isles.org.uk/...html)certainly not fancy, but very clean and economical. Also had a fabulous dinner at The Cabin - order the seafood platter.

Have a great time!
