Mission Impossible: finding a budget hotel in Rome

I will be in Rome in oct/2003. I started looking for a Hotel more than one month in advance. I would stretch my budget till Euro 130. Pensione Panda, Pensione Primavera, Residenza Panthaleo, Hotel Navona, Casa Kolbe, Pensione Paradiso... They are all full. My last hope now is Hotel Arenula. Anybody has stayed there?

Have you tried Hotel Spring House? We stayed there and liked it. They are online at www.hotelspringhouse.com and offer specials all the time.

We're staying at Hotel Aberdeen in a few weeks and it's within that range. Try there.

Have you looked at Hotel Italia? We're staying there next week, and paying 121E per night (including a/c. It's cheaper if you don't want a/c). Their website is www.hotelitaliaroma.com. They also have good reviews on the hotel section on fodors. Good luck!

Hi Seamus,

I'm staying at Hotel Trastevere mid October. Doubles with bath are 100E per night, including breakfast. I tried to find the phone or fax for this hotel on the internet but couldn't. If you're interested send me an email and I'll look up the info tonight when I get home.

Thanks for all the messages!

What I found so far:

Hotel Homs - Euro 206 - nice location
Hotel Italia Roma - Euro 113 - Via Nazionale ( a bit too close to Termini )
Hotel Aberdeen - Euro 160 - almost facing Termini
Spring House - Euro 195

Since I had some very bad experience in Termini region I dont want to stay there. I was offered a room at Diplomatic Hotel for Euro 140 and at San Carlo for Euro 155. San Carlo seems wonderful, should I stretch my budget even more??? ( my husband will kill me )

A hotel I'd found on the web, and considered on my first trip to Rome, was the Hotel Giardino, only a block or so from the Quirinale Palace.

http://www.hotel-giardino-roma.com/

If you'd consider staying in a B&B you might also want to check into some of the B&B services. (We did this for four days on our first trip -- in a B&B in the Prati district -- and really enjoyed it.)

DriNL, I'm confused about your comment that Hotel Aberdeen is almost facing Termini. The hotel map (and Viamichelin.com) show it to be about 6 blocks away on Via Firenze and close to Piazza Repubblica. Is this wrong? Is this a bad area? Now I'm concerned...

Hi There,

Take a look at this site http://www.sleepinitaly.com/files/bb_roma.html

I would try and book something that looks good to you. Also in the comment section on th ebooking form, put in your request for what your needs are price wise, dates, areas ect and they should get back with you by morning. If the B&B you first requested is booked then they will suggest another one based on your needs you listed.

Good luck, E

About Aberdeen: look to the map they provide on their website. The block on the left of the map ( the first one going towards the hotel direction ) is actually a bus terminal. Hotel Aberdeen is almost one block after it only. Last time I was in Rome I got lost around Termini at night and a man started following me saying bad things ( sexual conotation ) in italian, which I speak. Had to stop a carabinieri ( policeman ) that took me to my hotel on the police car. But the reviews on Tripadvisor are nice.

Hotel Trastevere: full ( and ppl reported it as a noisy place )
Hotel Homs: impossible to get a rate under Euro 206. If someone knows a trick, please teach me.

Hotel Forte: Euro 180 - looks nice

Hotel Parlamento: Euro 152 - also looks nice

Does anyone know why it is so busy in Italy on October? I live in the Netherlands and it is dead over here and I am Brazilian so I know that it is pretty quiet in South America too. Perhaps I am not lucky at all!

And why are hotels in Rome so expensive? I could book a nice comfy hotel in London - that is known as the most expensive city in Europe - for Euro 90 ( yes Euro, not pound!!! )

della torre argentina

I stayed there for 100 Euros for a single

It's in the Largo Argentina area. Nice.

Also, B&B Golden House or Atlante Star Hotel (which is run down, but cheap)- near the Vatican.

I think I will have to stay at the Diplomatic - the San Carlo is... guess what? ... FULL

I feel like all the nice hotels are being taken and I am here searching and searching. If I take too long I wont even have the option of the Diplomatic.

Last time I was in Rome I stayed at Pensione Panda - a true find! Cheap, wonderful location, clean... But u need to book almost 2 months before. And I didn't... snif snif

Re: And why are hotels in Rome so expensive?

Supply and demand. Greater demand vis-a-vis supply almost inevitably bids up prices.

I stayed at the Panda (thanks to a mention of it by someone here on Fodors) on my first visit to Rome. One of the smallest rooms I've ever had in Europe, but a great value otherwise, especially considering the location.

Just got back from Rome and stayed at the Hotel Aberdeen. I found it in both Frommers Guide and Rick Steves(which I usually don't use). The hotel is about a 4 block walk from Termini/1 block off Via Nationale and a block from the metro stop Repubilica. My daughter and I loved the hotel and its price-88 Euros(Rick Steves reader price-just mention book) for a double with breakfast. We had a corner room that was very clean, had a combo shower and bath and it was quite large.Satelite TV,minibar,in room safe,A/C and very quiet at night-across from the Ministry of Defense. The breakfast was okay nothing special(ham, cheese, rolls, yoghurt, cereal, etc.) but filling. The staff at the hotel were wonderful. The front desk(Sabrina and her cousins) are so helpful. Had a problem with our hot water being too hot in shower and repair man was up to fix immediately. There is free internet access in downstairs sittingroom and several doors down is a small grocery store. Our favorite restaurant in Rome is just one street up and to the left from the Hotel Aberdeen-TARGET restaurant. Absolutely heaven, great atmosphere and terrific food/prices-I referred several other people there from the hotel and they ended up going back several times too.Their house wine is fabulous, calamari to die for and the pasta verte with pesto...be still my stomach!!! I liked this hotel as it was close enough to public transportation that we could take metro/buses around town;train out to Pompeii, metro and bus to catacombs, train to Ostia Antica etc. without using expensive taxis.I was so concerned about not being near the Trevi or Pantheon but after going there was glad that we were not in the noise and tourists. There are only about 35 rooms so if you are interested in this hotel especially in the summer I would definitely recommend reserving early as it is quite popular. It has an award from the Australian tourist commission on the wall so I think that many people are familar with it.
