We visited Madrid in the Fall of 2002, staying at the Hotel Arosa 21 Salud. It was a good location for walking, except to the Prado, not too noisey at night, nice breakfast and comfortable room. We also spent several nights at Gran Hotel
Poeta Iglesias, 3 after a short trip to Portugal. It was equally as nice and in a different location.

I agree to stay somewhere near del Sol in the center. I stayed at the Hotel Santo Domingo and realy liked it. Good location and the subway was right across the street. Its also very quiet. The Carlos V is also highly recommended but on a busy pedestrian shopping street.

Both hotels are represented by Best Western so its an easy phone call, although sometimes you can get cheaper rates if you eMail the hotel direct. The Santo Domingo has a lot of pics on their websight.
Have Fun!

We just returned from a Barcelona-Valencia-Benedorm-Granada-Seville-Madrid whirlwind. In Madrid we loved staying near the Prado at the Hotel Dulcinea (look up on madridman.com) We had a two bedroom apartment that was spotless and comforting after many one room hotel rooms. It was about $55 a night--clearly our best deal on the trip.
