Macia Real de la Alhambra hotel on outskirts of Granada
Anyone ever stay there?
Gets good reviews but over 2 km from both the town and Alhambra itself.
Supposedly frequent buses to both places.
Good prices and the parking is suppose to be half of what it costs in the center. There is supposedly street parking too.

It's at at the end of a tunnel of a bypass that serves Alhambra complex and Sierra Nevada. The surroundings are pretty dull, modern with complete lack of character. If you imagine a US-style motel strip, you get the idea. Hotel itself is well run, with a pool, and has its own parking (for which they make a small charge) or you can try nearby streets for free. It's a good base for visiting Alhambra, but the surroundings are totally lacking in charm, such as views of Alhambra (which you get by staying closer to the complex, such as Hotel Guadalupe, Parador, America etc) or the lively street scene of Albaicín or downtown. There is a good bus service to the center and taxi won't cost too much, but the hotel is only recommended to those who only want a handy pit stop and cheap parking for Alhambra, but even then, a hotel closer to the complex will be more interesting and convenient.

I would recommend any of these three for location,Hotel Guadalupe, Parador, America. The parador is inside the alhmbra itself so you have the opportunity to walk the grounds when everyone has left. You have to book a long time in advance and is by no means cheap, 300 euros plus. We stayed there last month and it is very good. The america is also inside the grounds but have not stayed there. Some friends who stayed with us at the parador stayed the next night at the guadalupe and said it was very good, at a fraction of the parador price. Its situation is right by the entrance to the alhambra so it is ideal to visit the alhambra. If you are to visit it is best to buy the tickets in advance as only an amount are issued on the day.

Yes got the Alhambra tickets already.
Considered the Guadalupe and America as well.
Seems like the Macia is nicer than either of those hotels but probably because of the location.
There are some affordable hotels near Plaza Nueva and Plaza Catolica but the parking options seem doubtful.

OK, took the advice here and opted for Citymar San Anton. Not right in the center but much closer than the Macia Real. Got a package with parking included for 55 Euro for a double per night.
Went so far as to research Granada bus maps to see if staying out at the Macia Real was viable.
We'll see, it sounds like driving into the center has hazards like cameras which issue fines.

Hola,
That's a sad place to stay in Granada !
The best option to make the most of Granada is to stay in the Albayzin area (the old Moorish Quarter)... most hotels or rentals there have views onto the Alhambra !
Have a look at www.vrbo.com for a private rental or check tripadvisor.com and of course fodors guide book for a list of the best places to stay in the Albayzin.
Hasta luego,
Christine in Granada

Anyone familiar with the bus system in Granada?
Trying to figure out which buses would be useful from the Citymar San Anton.
Looks like Line 3 comes to closest, at Palacio de Congreso, from which it goes on to the Gran Via 1 stop near the Cathedral and Plaza Nueva.

And from Plaza Nueva, line 30 goes to the Alhambra? I would assume you get free transfers with the same ticket within some window of time?
And this map appears to be the best one as far as overlaying bus stops with streets:

These aren't great distances but my understanding is that Granda has some steep hills, especially to go to the Alhambra.
