trains are cheap and easy - few minutes and they even stop at the sleepy Pisa S Leandro (? not sure i have name right) but anyway a small station within eyeshot of the Leaning Tower before going on to Pisa Centrale (25 mins from Lucca)
regional trains no reservations possible and lots of seats when i've taken it.
Check out Montecatini-Terme - a few minutes the other way on the rail line from Lucca - one of Italy's premo spas - especially for health and an oasis of green parks and no mopeds practically in Italy. check it out.
Above Lucca is Pinnochio's town - small village where it was born?

We took the bus from Lucca to Pisa.
It was a short trip through pretty country, and the bus stopped right at the Tower square.
We had a good lunch at a nearby restaurant and caught the bus across the street for our return to Lucca.
We really enjoyed the day.

...The train ride from Lucca to Pisa was about 20 minutes. We got off at Pisa S. Rossore station, since it's the closest to the tower( a few short blocks).
thanks willit - S Rossore is the station. To get to the Tower go out thru the back fence and to the Supermarket and then you'll see the Tower. Large supermarket if looking for picnic supplies.

Yes, Train again. Pisa Centrale to Livorno is around 17 minutes - no changes and an fairly frequent.
Italian trains are fairly good, and not very expensive. the main site for information is http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html
