Looking for a small, charming hotel outside of the city of York UK

My husband and I are looking for a small charming (12 to 25 rooms, 3* 4* or 5*) hotel up to about an hour outside of York. We do not need a pool or spa, but if they have one, that is ok. Just looking for a special memorable place to stay. Restaurant for dinner is not essential as long as there are some places to have dinner in the area. Any ideas on what to do in the Yorkshire countryside would be greatly appreciated as well. Thank you for your help!

The Black Swan at Oldstead is lovely - and the food is excellent. They have four poster beds and the most amazing bathrooms with copper baths.

Oldstead is a tiny village.
Helmsley is a large village (or small town I suppose) and has The Feathers.

The Crab and Lobster is also worth a look - some of the rooms are very strange! Again the food is really nice here (we often go for lunch).

The Fauconberg Arms is more an inn than a hotel, but Coxwold is a beautiful village.

I can give you literally dozens of things to see and do in the North Yorkshire countryside if you'd let me know what your interests are.
The 'big' places to visit are the two National Parks (the Dales and the Moors), Castle Howard, Fountains Abbey, Whitby etc etc. There are many more!

Not a hotel but a VERY nice B&B: www.millgatehouse.com in Richmond, a small town both pretty and interesting (castle, Georgian theatre). We dined well at the Frenchgate Restaurant. In addition, there seems to be several other restaurants in the area recommended.

We used this as a base to see Durham (highly recommended) and Fountains Abbey/Ripon. In addition to the dales.

Still in Ontario Bilbo! But staying at my daughter's house complete with wifi!
Our road trip was beyond amazing.
Agree about the Crab and Lobstet - those rooms are zany! Great food though. And the wooden cabins always catch my eye.

We stayed at Brickfields Farm not far from Helmsley. This is one of the nicest, most comfortable and charming places I've ever stayed.

In addition to the things mentioned by Morgana (who was so helpful when we made this trip) we especially enjoyed Rievaulx Abbey and Ripon Cathedral.

I'm generally allergic to English country house hotels.

But we greatly enjoyed Middlethorpe Hall (http://www.middlethorpe.com/the-hotel/ ) for a significant birthday. It's owned by the National Trust, whose operations the hotel profits subsidise.

You might consider checking out some Best Western properties. I know they are kind of hit and miss in the States but in England they are in some lovely historical buildings.

It's been 15 years since we stayed in York so I won't recommend any one particular place, but we did enjoy our stay there and you can find some nice places withing walking distance to town.
