Anybody know the best way to get to Portsmouth from London? Will be staying at the Caring Hotel. Understand that driving out of London is a poor option so maybe train (which one, where) Want to see HMS Victory. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

There is a direct train from Waterloo to Portsmouth Harbour station. It is a short walk to the Royal Dockyard and HMS Victory.

Train or bus. We took a bus and it was not a bad ride. Make sure you see the Mary Rose. We went over and saw the sub base and did a tour of the harbour. It was an all in one ticket.

I don't know about the bus but the train from Waterloo is very easy, frequent and relatively fast.

If it's a nice day, you might want to walk to little public square in front of the Still and West and Spice Island pubs. It's on the water with a great view of passing boats and big ferries. Just get a drink from either pub or bring your own food/drink and relax.

If you still have time to kill, bus to Southsea to see Henry VIII 's castle.

You are staying north of Hyde Park -- so take the Central Line east to Bond Street, then transfer to the Jubilee Line south to Waterloo - train from there.

Others have mentioned it, but the all inclusive ticket to the RN Dockyard will give you access to HMS Victory, HMS Warrior (1860 ironclad warship) and the Mary Rose Museum. The latter, to me, is one of the best designed and most interesting museums I've ever visited.

I just read this to my husband. When we were there we had just a small exhibit as they were building the new museum. He so wants to see the new museum. The tour of the old sub was very interesting. I was thinking the Victory would be like the constitution but it was huge.

The new Mary Rose museum is not included in the all inclusive ticket, it now commands its own entrance fee.

That's correct. Very odd. They probably should change the name from Full Navy ticket to something else. Beyond the Full ticket, you can buy a ticket for a number of attractions and those also cannot be used for the MR museum. Regardless of how it's internally organised, you'd think they could cooperate so that it's easier and clearer for the consumer rather than having to buy tickets from two different outlets.

I suspect it's to recoup the costs of the new museum which cost £35m to build. You can buy the ticket from the same outlet.

I like that the ticket is separate as we are going just to see the Mary Rose museum. We saw everything else last visit. A new Premier Inn is being built that we have made reservations for next June. Thank you for the link to the DDay museum. We added another night to our London reservation but thinking our three nights in Portsmouth will be good with my list growing.
