London - Observations and Recs

HOTEL - The Soho Hotel - 4 Richmond Mews, London

I barely made it in on the last flight from Inverness apparently into London. Checked into The Soho Hotel. HUGE metal cat sculpture in the lobby. Kind of wild interior design but I like it. Pretty happening bar. Appears to be popular with the gay scene.

LOVE my fabulous room. Paying out the nose for it but WOW. BIG window. The walls of my room are covered in dark gray striped flannel. Very cool - with white and hot pink accents. It totally works. Very comfortable.

The dining room DEFINITELY can be improved. Breakfast service is PAINFULLY slow. And this evening for dinner I sent back my food TWICE. And I don't even know that last time I did that even once. I had turkey and dressing the other night that I should have sent back. And I'd LOVE to get my hands on the menu - to change it to more of what people might want to order.

They do a really good job on room service. MUCH better than the dining room.

HAIRCUT

Got a REALLY GOOD haircut for only 30 pounds - and the GREAT stylist - named E - worked with my hair a LONG time to get it just right. He is absolutely meticulous and patient and I LOVE my cut. His job was particularly difficult - to correct a botched cut I had by a non-professional in Scotland - but I was absolutely desperate and had no choice then.

I'm really glad I had the guts to walk in off the street and give them a try. I can recommend E at Basecuts - www.basecuts.com - at 97 Berwick Street - 020 7287 6807

JEWELRY SHOP - CUSTOM

Wandered out a bit this evening and found a REALLY NICE jewelry shop in Soho - Got some GORGEOUS earrings - like I've wanted for find for the last 4 months - custom made and REALLY pretty for my tres picky standards.

The shop is called Joy Everley www.joyeverley.com at 7 Newburgh Street t- 020 7287 2792
What I really like is that you get one of a kind stuff and the designer - Joy - is in the shop. I really like her things. I also get a pretty cross for my cross collection. I think you'll like this shop.

I'm here for two more weeks - and will let you know other discoveries that come my way.

Take care and PLEASE cross your fingers that the airports get back in running order here soon to end this travel misery for so many folks who are trying to get home to loved ones for the holidays.

Yours in travel spirit

Just curious - what was wrong with your food each time you sent it back?

It may be cold outside but eating in a hotel restaurant is such a bad idea. There is no way most management can do food AND rooms (it just too complicated for the dears).

No idea why breakfast is slow, why not ask them? I find it most fun to ask these sort of questions you find out so much. Keep up the news on how London manages Christmas
