For weather the BBC's website has lots of info. http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/travel/..._kingdom.shtml gives a general guide to UK weather.
And http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/feature...ew/index.shtml gives a review of each month in the past 5 years.

My sister and I visited London In February 2002 and surprinsingly, the weather was in the upper 40's, little to no rain, and did not detracted at all from sightseeing. It was a total surprise to us who were prepared for rainy and cloudy days. As far as cold weather, the key is to know how to dress for it; layers, scarf, hat, and a good pair of gloves makes all the difference.
Also, we took the London Express train from Gatwick Airport to Victoria Station ($12/pp; you can pay to the train attendant), and a taxi from Victoria Station to Victoria Inn on Belgrave Road (about $4/total). We could walk from the Station, but with suitcases and all we prefered to take the taxi. Have a good time!

Take a lot at weatherbase.com and worldclimate.com for historical average temps and precip. Also take a look at sunrisesunset.com to have an idea of how much daylight you can expect in January in London.
A taxi from LHR to a central area of London will cost you between $50-65. There are car services would would be cheaper; there is a guy named Ray Skinner (www.london-transfers.com) who is frequently mentioned on this site as offering great airport and general van transport service at a good price. Run a search here for comments from others. I have not used him.

Hi Barefootes,
We've selected February travel dates to London several times over the years and always found it to be a great time to visit. As others have said, the weather will be cold, but we've never found it too brutal. On the positive side, the cost are lower, crowds thinner, and all the museums, theatres, resturants are just as exciting as the peak season. Enjoy your trip!!
