Can London taxis hold 4 passengers and luggage?
The 4 of us are arriving at Gatwick Airport 6:30 AM week of March 15. We'll each have one small suitcase and one carry on bag, and no more. Can the standard London cab hold 4 passengers with luggage, or must we hire a van, shuttle, etc. Our hotel is in Notting Hill area.

If your flight lands at 6.30 it will be at least 7.30 before you get out of the airport. The journey by road through South London suburbs is a long and miserable one, and you will be right in the thick of the rush hour.
You should seriously consider taking the train from Gatwick to Victoria, and a taxi from there. You have a reasonably manageable amount of luggage,so the train should not be difficult.

The standard London Cabs do not come out as far as Gatwick. There is a local company who has the franchise but only people on expense accounts bother.
Do what everybody else dies, Get the train into London.
The Gatwick Express has a special 4 for 2 fare where 4 people travelling go for the price of 2.
This works out at 50 GBP return for 4 people.
At Victoria Station there are plenty of black cabs who'll take you or you can get the London Underground direct.

Southern Trains will carry four people for £20 - to Victoria or London Bridge. The problem with that fare is that it's not valid until 10AM.

But the good news is that once you're settled in your hotel, you can jump a train and go to someplace in the Southeast for the day (such as Canterbury or Dover) on the same ticket.
