Gatwick to London

I know there is a train to London from Gatwick. We will be traveling with luggage and golf clubs. Would this be a difficult trip? What would it cost to get a taxi? Might we be able to store our golf clubs at Gatwick? Also, is there a central theater district in London? We are planning a two day stopover on our way home to Dallas from Portugal. Many thanks for any help.

Rather then a taxi I'd suggest a car pick up service. I always use www.london-transfers.com (Ray Skinner's company) - it's a flat fee, plus tip. There is another company that Patrick on this Forum also recommends called Swiss Cottage Cars. If you do a search you will find plenty of info.

The "West End" is considered the theater district in London, the majority of theaters are situated in that area.

Storage facilities may be limited at airports these days due to terroist activity so I am not sure if you could leave the golf clubs there or not. I don't think I'd want to haul them on and off a train. Don't forget if you do take the train in to Victoria you will need a taxi to your hotel and in the long run it can cost as much as a driver service. I surely would not take golf clubs on the tube.

I'll second the recommendation of Ray's London Transfers. It's so wonderful to be met at customs and have someone take over for you from there (of course, I"m usually jet-lagged, which you won't be).

It's cheaper than a taxi and pretty cost-efficient for two people, compared to the Gatwick Express plus a taxi from the train station in London.

I would leave the golf clubs at Gatwick, see http://www.excess-baggage.com/airport.asp for information, and take the train into London.

I would offer similar good comments on Eddie Manning. A search on either name will yield numerous threads on use of their companies.

Best wishes,

I've done just that (left clubs at LGW) twice. The clubs were for the next leg of the trips after flying up tp Scotland. But the first weeks were in London. Leave the clubs - it will cost about £5 per day for the storage but you won't have to hassle w/ them or step over them every time you move around your hotel room.

There is no single theatre district - but major concentrations are along and near Shaftsbury Ave in Soho and near Covent Garden. There are other theatres all over - but all are easily accessible from any part of London by tube.

If it is only 2 of you, take the Gatwick Express train. Couldn't be easier and takes about 30 mins from the terminal to Victoria station. A cab would cost more tha £60 and take quite a bit longer due to the distance/traffic. A car service makes sense if there are 3 or more of you since they charge a flat rate instead of individual fares. And a car service will drop you right at your door. But if you have a lot of luggage you would need a mini van and that sometimes. costs more.
