There are so many factors in choosing a hotel. Check out www.tripadvisor.com. It has a huge number of hotels ranked by "regular people". It also has location, maps, and cost.

Aug. 27-30, my husband and I will be traveling. I have researched, always use tripadvisory, but am always looking for more. The Flemings Mayfair was suggested but not getting great reviews. Also, outside of London, Grims Dyke Hotel.

that is only about £150 a night (which is less than £130 when you add in the VAT). That is doable but not a splurge by any means. I'm pretty sure you can't get Flemings Mayfair for anywhere near that price.
What sort of amenities do you want? Instead of getting a 2 or 3 star place for $250-$300, you could get a 4 star for a bit over $100 if you use priceline . . . .

Rathbone Hotel in Fitzrovia is reasonably priced, from about £96 for a double upto £150+ according to their website which may or may not show realtime availability.
The Radissons might also be a good bet, eg SAS Portman or Leicester Square, rates in region of £159 upwards.

Last May have stayed at the HOXTON hotel. A new hotel in the City. The earliest you book the cheaper the price. On average I have paid 100 pounds a night. Check www.hoxtonhotels.com

OK, I know you want to hear first-hand recommendations but since you value TripAdvisor, as do I, in helping make decisions you might also look at a dscounter such as www.londontown.com...otherwise we are gonna be here for weeks splitting hairs.

KB,
I can recommend Rubens at the Palace. We have stayed there in the past and the rooms were very comfortable and the service was great. It is 3 blocks from the Palace. You can usual get a deal on the internet for about $200 per night including VAT and breakfast. It may be a little late to book for August, but it is worth a try. Good luck.

We jsut returned from a wonderful stay at Sanctuary House Hotel on Tothill, Westminister Abbey is at the end of the block, and we loved it - comfortable. clean, and the location was incredible-chek it out on TripAdvisor. We paid 160 pounds for a superior double-contact the hotel direct for better deals than offered on the internet. Have a great trip-take one of the PubWalks, it was a great fun evening, and I am not big on beer-had me a Pims and Lemonade at most pubs we went to-try it.

You could try the Morgan Hotel in Bloomsbury. A couple of years ago it was £95 for a double room with full breakfast and VAT included. The rooms are small, and there is no elevator. There is quite a bit of information on it here on Fodors if you type the name into the search box.
We particularly like the South Kensington area at the Gloucester Road tube stop. We have stayed in both the Millennium Bailey's and the M. Gloucester through Priceline, and there are a couple of Holiday Inns nearby.
