Yes, if you are over 18 it is safe to go alone. Our advice to you is to go to the top of this page, search on the keyword "United Kingdom," read those old threads, and then come back with more specific questions, and tell us a little about yourself.

Hi, Lim. I'm taking a trip to London alone in a couple of weeks. I'll be able to tell you more after that, but my sense is that it's reasonably safe so long a you exercise the same amount of caution that you would in any large city. If you are female, Fodors has a page on this Web site that gives advice to women traveling alone.

There's tons to do in London (architecture, theatre, shopping, museums, galleries, etc.) so give us an idea of what you'd like to see. One thing I'm going to do on my first night in London is a pub walk with London Walks (www.walks.com). That might be something to consider if you're concerned about finding something to do in the evenings.

Vita, if you're coming to London from the US, you might want to reconsider doing a walk on your first evening -- you might be wiped out from jet lag. Plus you might not have gotten a full night's sleep the night before, especially if you flew in overnight. So you might want to save evening activities, especially strenuous ones like walks, for later in your visit.

"you might want to reconsider doing a walk on your first evening -- you might be wiped out from jet lag."

More lifesaving advice here. Who would ever to think to use moderation in going for a walk when dead-tired?

Another helpful hint: don't brush your teeth too vigorously before you go to bed. You might get out of breath. If in doubt, just wait until the following morning.
Lighten up. This board is full of overambitious itineraries that people might regret.

Thanks, x. I actually used the same approach in Rome and it works for me. Yes, I was tired but it's good way to keep myself awake and keep moving. I'll be doing a pub walk so I doubt it will be strenuous.

The nice thing about London Walks is that you don't have to reserve. You just show up so nothing's set in stone. Besides, it's only 5 GBP so if it's killing me, I'll just bail.
