Lodgings for Family of 4 near London School of Economics?

Lodgings for Family of 4 near London School of Economics?
My oldest stepson is studying abroad at the London School of Economics next year. We'd like to visit him as a family (2 adults and 2 high school kids).
Does anyone have any recommendations on hotels or specific apartment rentals near LSE? Is this a good area to stay?
Or is it better to stay in another part of London? (As long as on the Tube, I think we could get to each other easily). I was thinking Covent Garden or Notting Hill could be nice.
It would be the first time the kids are in London, so somewhere central/touristy is ok (safety is key) and would prefer somewhere with "action" - close to museums/sites/etc. Moderately priced places; willing to go for more $ if worth the experience.
Any ideas much appreciated!! (I've looked in the forums but would like specific recommendations rather than a link to priceline or VRBO).

If I'm not mistaken, LSE has more than one campus, so can you be more specifi? Also, I would think that the school has a list of recommended family accommodations, but I could be wrong.
Almost every place in central London is safe. What kind of "touristy" do you want? History? Theater? Pop scene/shopping? Which museums? The British Museum is pretty far from the V&A?

LSE has their own rentals during summer (usually June through mid September), Christmas and Easter breaks.

The teaching buildings are all in and around Aldwych/Kingsway. The main residences are mostly fairly central, in and around Covent Garden/Bloomsbury, with one up by the Angel in Islington and others out to the south east. Covent Garden and Bloomsbury would both be very good areas both to see attractions, and to be close to where he'd be working and socialising. However, he might not be living in LSE residences but in a private rental anywhere in London, so I'd wait and see where he'll be living before making any firm plans.
If you go in vacation time, you might be able to stay in an LSE residence, but he might have had to move out of one to make room for tourists!

I agree w/ PatrickLondon. Don't make any plans yet -- wait until you see where he settles. You really don't need to lodge near where he takes classes - but it might be better to stay near his apartment/flat/LSE lodging.
You are correct in thinking that the tube/buses will easily get you anywhere in central London, so the exact location isn't as important as the type of neighborhood and your budget.
How much do you plan on spending??
(BTW - priceline really isn't an option for you since it only deals w/ double rooms in London)

Bidding on Priceline is a reasonable option if the family gets two hotel rooms, which can often be a cost-effective solution. Hotwire can be a good choice too, and allows one to search for up to four people in the room.
I think Bloomsbury, Mayfair, or South Kensington are the most convenient area choices, although many other areas in London would work. A place in Bloomsbury or Mayfair would likely be closest to your stepson.

WillTravel: I agree that priceline is a good option for 4 adults traveling together. But I'd never recommend it for a family. The chances of getting rooms on different floors/wings is too great. Unless Mom and Dad don't care about sleeping in the same room.
Hotwire on the other hand, is a possibliity.

Yes, it is possible. I used HW to book a London hotel when I was there in May.
But if you meant if someone living outside of the US w/a foreign CC can use HW to book a hotel outside the US; then I don't know the answer.

HS can mean 14 yo in the States. Some families would not want kids that age on their own. Now if both of the kids are older - then sure, no problem. I just made the comment because if folks are not familiar w/ Priceline they may not know they cannot assume they'll get connecting rooms or a room large enough for 4.
