Lodging in Hamburg and Sylt

We are planning a trip to Hamburg, then on to Sylt, Germany. We are looking for places to stay at a reasonable price. In Hamburg, we want to be in the city center near the lake. In Sylt, we are looking for some place in Rantum. Advice?

meta90paul,

Currently to my mind jump two places:

Hotel Vorbach in Johnsallee in Rotherbaum district, approx. 10 min. by foot from the Outer Alster Lake.
An old fashioned (but to my knowlegde well kept) family owned hotel.

Crowne Plaza Hamburg on the opposite shore of the Outer Alster Lake. Usually I would not rank this in the moderate price category, but sometimes incredible deals through the Crowne Plaza Internet Page come up. This would be more of a convention and business traveller oriented hotel, but in its favor it is just two minutes by foot from the Outer Alster plus it sports an indoor pool.

As I am living in the city (and am not paolettacc's ex- boyfriend ;-) ), I have not stayed at either, but have heard from people who have, so I dare to post info on these.

If you specify your budget, I will gladly try to come up with further suggestions- also regarding restaurants and other activities, if you wish.

Cheers

hsv,

What about the Garden Hotel - http://www.gardenhotels.de/ - in Poeseldorf? Some people I know loved the place.

You're very, very lucky to live in such a wonderful city...

paoletta,

Garden Hotels should be a very good suggestion, too! I had been thinking about them, but thought they might exceed the "reasonable" price criterion set by the OP.
Now I have checked their website and found they are a bit cheaper than I would have thought. Definitely an excellent choice and great location!

Another option might be family owned Hotel Smolka in Isestraße, also about a 10 min. stroll from the (extreme North End) of the Outer Alster. It also has a good reputation and the owner was/ is (?) chairman of the local association of hotels.

Well, I feel lucky to be living here, although others might disagree (there was an argument about this just recently here on this forum, which can be found by clicking on my screen name and then the "HSV- Now we know... subject" )...But judging from your lovely name, I suppose you must be living somewhere probably even nicer!

Ciao to Italy (or am I mistaken here?)

Thanks for responses. We would like to keep it under $200 USD. I know this will be nearly impossible on Sylt, though, so maybe under $300. in Sylt. Also, a friend recommended the Ibis hotels but I'm wondering about them because they are so cheap.

The Ibis Hotel you would want is called Ibis Hotel Hamburg Alster Centrum.

It is located right across a small sidestreet from the Kempinski Hotel Atlantic (one of the city's prime hotels). The back of the Ibis faces a major railroad line. It is just a few steps from the Outer Alster lake.

I have heard once from a couple that stayed there (right after its opening about 10 years ago). They were pleased with what they got for their money.
Ibis Hotels in general are clean and very efficient. That's the good thing to say about them. And if you need just a plain and clean place to crash for the night they will usually cater to that need.
I have twice stayed at an Ibis Hotel (elsewhere) and uniformly did not like it. They just feel very impersonal and their bathrooms usually consist of just one molded piece of plastic (fascinating in a way) that gives me a strange feeling of somewhere between a ship's cabin and prison- although my last assumption is not based on personal experience ;-).
All in all they are a little bit too generic for my taste.

Another option for a more private atmosphere might be Hotel Baseler Hof. It is a family owned Hotel that is simple but nice enough and has a pretty renowned wine bar and restaurant (Kleinhuis). It is on Esplanade in very close proximity to both the Inner and Outer Alster Lakes right in the city center.
