I spent five days there this summer and posted a report. Before going I posted a series of questions here and got a lot of answers. Several other people have posted recent reports. To save us all repeating it over again -- go to the search function on this page. Type in Lipari, click Italy, and then search. You will get lots of information. If you have some specific questions after that ask away and one of us will be happy to answer and to help.

To sum it all up -- the Aeolian Islands, of which Lipari is only one, are great!

Spent a few days of our honeymoon in Lipari, and it is a MUST DO if you're travelling along the north eastern coast of Sicily. We had some of the best food of our entire trip and our hotel was very nice (Hotel Rocce Azzure - overlooking the sea). Absolutely charming . . .

But if you go to Fillipino make sure you are the last seating. I have never been so rushed in my life. Within the first five mintues they asked several times to take our order. We kept trying to say we needed a little more time and weren't in a hurry, but obviously they were. When we did order, the courses came quicker than we could eat them. A big dissapointment to an otherwise nice evening.

We told another poster about this, and when they went, they ordered one course at a time and had a much better experience.

I liked Salina. We visited in February and were the only travelers there. We stayed on the Southern coast and the hotelier opened up her place for us, turning on the water and heat at this beautiful place overlooking the sea. No restaurants were open so she found a woman in town to cook us dinner, which we ate with her young son. Best vacation ever.

Lipari is by far the biggest island with lots of hotels and restaurants. It's also central, with good connections to all the other islands, so it's easy to make day trips to any of the others. There are several companies running ferries, hydrofoils and excursion vessels - try www.siremar.it, www.snav.it, www.alilauro.it, www.lacavanavigazione.it, but there are others. I once stayed two nights on Lipari, stranded there because of a storm which cancelled all ferries, so I'd recommend allowing spare time after visiting the islands.

While in Lipari, you must eat at La Cambusa!! Incredible food and the owner is extremely gracious. We ate there 2 of the 3 nights we stayed on the island. It was the best food we found on our entire trip to Sicily. Wish I was back there right now . . .
