ERBM suggests:

>...you stay at Hotel Bonnet in Vezac- one of the finest restaurants in the Dordogne...

I thought that the Bonnet was in Beynac.

The Cinq Chateau is in Vézac.

In May 2005 we stayed in La Roque-Gigeac and found it very centrally located and reasonably priced. We drove up to Domme and I'm not sure I would have wanted to overnight there.

IRA is correct!- Hotel Bonnet is in Beynac. My house is just a one minute drive behind the hotel, in Vezac. I've always thought of Bonnet as part of Vezac but in fact it is not; however, it is close to the border between the two. Hard to teach an old dog new tricks etc...I suppose I will always think of it as part of Vezac. The point is, however, the grub is great and the rooms more than adequate.

My new favorite restaurant in the area is the charming Cabanoix et Chataignier, in Domme. The have a fantastic foie gras selection -- six classic presentations to choose from. Or you can choose from a list of entrées and plats that include dishes influenced by a number of different cuisines...lamb tagine with prunes, gazpacho with fresh mozzarella cubes, avocado and pommelo salad with thyme sorbet. Presentations are lively and imaginative, and service is charming and consistent. Sorry, no duck confit.

Thanks La Tour de la Cause for the info on the new resto. Next time I cross over the river from Laprade I'll check it out. More duck confit we can do without!

Not really relevant to the question, but I thought it might amuse.
Many years ago, while staying at LÉspanade, we had dinner there. An older couple (letīs call them couple A) with a dog, were having dinner. During the course of their meal, a younger couple and were seated by the Maitre D at a nearby table. Letīs call them couple B. After a few minutes, Mme B lit up a cigarette. She hadnīt had more than a few puffs when Mme A started waving her hands around in a histrionic way. Mme B had her back to her so didnt notice. Minutes later, Mme A gets up and crossing to the Bīs table, demands that Mme B puts out her cigarette. Mme B looks at her as if she had just asked her to take out her false teeth (this was in the days long before France had any no smoking rules). She carried on smoking. There was a loud altercation and Mme B grudgingly said she would finish the cigarette she was smoking and then not smoke any more.
Mme A: No, you will finish it now.
Mme B: Like hell I will. And if you carry on like this, I will light up another.
Mme A: I shall report you to the management.
Mme B: Go ahead. Sheīs a good friend of mine.
Mme A goes off to fetch the Maitre D and they continue slanging each other in front of her.
Mme Maitre D: Oh La La
Mme B: If it bothers you so much, why donīt you change tables?
Mme A: We are half way through our meal, you change tables.
Mme Maitre D. Look, I have another table over here, letīs move shall we.
Mme B: No way.
Mme Maitre D: Oh La La (fanning herself)
By now, the whole room is enjoying the theatre.
Mme Maitre D says something quietly to Mme B upon which she gets up and storms out of the restaurant in tears.
Mme A looks around triumphantly and then returns to her table. M B looks as if he doesnīt know what to do. Should he follow his wife out or stay? He decides to stay and pours himself a glass of wine.
M A cannot resist giving M B a lecture about the behaviour of his wife, whereupon, M B tells him to take a running jump.
M A (looking down his nose) tut tut, such language.
M B (who is a big man) If you say one more thing Iīm going to come over there and punch you.
Mme B returns to the table sans cigarette and with red eyes. Both tables finish their meal in total silence. I doubt that either of them enjoyed the meal. The meal was a bit dull from there on.

Ainhoa, thanks for that story - loved it!

If anyone's still following this, we ended up booking the L'Esplanade because they gave us much cheaper rates than were listed on their website - 84 Euro for a double with two twin beds and 104 Euro for a double with one king. We didn't get the room my parents had before (room 51), but they assure us that both our rooms will have views. We'll be going in mid-October. Can't wait!
