Layover in Istanbul
12 hour layover during day in Istanbul next week. Would there be time to see any of the city? Does anybody know if tours pick-up at airport? My 22 year old niece will be traveling alone, I don't think its safe for her to strike out on own. Thanks for any advice.

Having just been in Istanbul this summer for two days on a cruise, I'd feel comfortable letting my 22-year old daughter tour there on her own. I felt completely safe and as long as your niece has "city smarts", she'll do fine.
Also, be aware that if your niece is a U.S. citizen and plans to leave the airport, she will need to get a visa for Turkey which can be purchased in advance or at the airport.

Depending on time of day and assuming her luggage is all checked to final destination:
- 30 minutes to get to and clear immigration.
- 45 minutes to historic peninsula by cab.
- sightseeing
- 45 minutes cab ride back to airport (IST, I am assuming)
- 90-120 minutes required lead to departure for clearing security and check in.
Thus she can have anywhere up to 8 hours in the city which can allow her a great deal to see and experience, as well as one good meal and some local fast food specialties.
Can give more aid if you tell us arrival and departure times.
I just hope she is not arriving at SAW airport, which would curtail her time drastically.

Thanks for replies. She is arriving/departing IST on Turkish airlines, we just realized its a 22 hour layover....5PM to 3PM next day. So a hotel will be required and hopefully they can steer her in the right direction to see some highlights.
