Late April 2008 trip. Better to start in Venice or Lake Como?

The primary consideration we have in mind will be weather conditions, including flood season in Venice, lake conditions in Lake Como, and hiking weather in Cinque Terre. That in mind, we're trying to determine if it's better to start at Lake Como (flying into Milan) or to start in Venice. We have never visited either area.

We have the option to arrive in Milan on April 26, 2008, and depart from Venice on May 11, 2008. Or, arrive in Venice on 4/26 and depart from Milan on 5/11.

We will visit Cinque Terre, Tuscany (Florence, Siena) in the 2 weeks. If mapped, the trip would look like a horeshoe. We can start at Lake Como, then go south to Cinque Terre and into Tuscany then back northward to Venice and then home. Or, we can start in Venice, then go south to Tuscany, then to Cinque Terre, then to Milan and Lake Como. We will spend 3 nights in Lake Como, 3 nights in Venice, and the rest in our other destinations.

No way to know what the weather will be like - we just did a trip of similar locations and arrived 4/27 and left 5/8. The weather varried from hot and sunny days, to cold, windy, thunder and hail days, rain days also just normal mixed days. The day we left Greve it snowed up high in the hills for a few minutes. The next week it was 85 degrees!

Hi CA,

I would start in Venice and end up at the Lakes when the weather might be warmer.

Keep in mind that April to mid-May can be very changeable weather.

OTOH, with Global Warming, it might be too hot.

hi, CA,

As usual, Ira got there first.

Venice is THE place to arrive in Italy, if you've not been there before.

please try to resist the temptation to stay fewer nights in more places. in 2 weeks, 4 stops are quite enough.

I would suggest Venice, Florence, CT and Como. day trip to Milan.

have a great time,

regards, ann

End at the lakes if you can--that is your weather variable.

Thank you all. My inclination was to choose Venice but was uncertain. The comments you have made confirm my first thoughts. Venice it is!
