We just returned from Lake Como - July2007. We actually stayed in Como. We loved it there. But it depends on what you are looking for.
We arrived on a Sunday. There were several stages around the imbarcadero area with bands playing -- jazz and rock and roll.
If you like to run, there is a nice park for running.
The ferries pick you up regularly and you go to any of the different towns by ferry for exploring, but save some money by staying in Como.
The gelato we had we thought was better than Giolitti's in Rome. Try the frutti di bosco and cocco combination. The pastries at the local places were wonderful way to start the day along with coffee.
La Riva had wonderful pizzas for dinner, again right by the imbarcadera at Piazza Cavour.
The train station is within walking distance. There is shopping, a department store. The Duomo is beautiful.
If you want small, quaint and more expensive, try another town.
If you want a base to explore from, Como is fine.
If you haven't been to Switzerland, take a train to Lugano.

<<How is the drive from the Lakes to the Coast? >>
I would avoid driving from the Como area toward Milan on a weekday morning. We tried it once and it reminded me of a rush hour commute into NYC.
Como is OK as a base for a week. Of the mid-lake "triangle" area I would choose Varenna, but a week may be too long as a base there. On the other hand, a day trip would not be enough for me. I would definitely take the train to Lugano if staying in Como.
SML is a good base for the Ligurian Coast. Easy access to Rapallo and Portofino. Lovely town.
