La Scala - is it under renovation?
I've heard that La Scala is under extensive renovation for the 2003 season and is closed. Performances are being booked, but they are at Teatro degli Arcimboldi.

Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks

It is very possible that La Scala will be closed longer than scheduled. Yesterday's on-line paper, Corriere delle Sera, carried a front page story about these extremely controversial "renovations," and it includes a video clip and photos. Behind the Scala facade, the place looks at least as bad as after the Allies bombed it in World War II.

Teatro degli Arcimboldi was built to house the La Scala company until it can go home. In any case, you still can attend performances of the company, visit the Museum and the Bookstore.

Hi Marky!
Yes the La Scala is closed for renovations and not scheduled to reopen until sometime in 2004. Could be open in Jan 2004 or Dec 2004, who can say? Apparently the only features to remain original are the facade, foyer, ceiling and boxes. A large building to be used as dressing rooms is supposedly going to be annexed to the main building and will actually be taller than the actual opera house. Isn't anything sacred anymore?!
Happy Travels
Rick

Here's their website.

According to their schedule for October and November 2004, they are still using the Teatro degli Arcimboldi.

The new season begins Dec. 7 or 8, I believe. Have heard that the rebuilt (not refurbished, in my opinion; they demolished the place!)LaScala will reopen on time in Dec. 2004 but they will not be ready to have the full season. So, will have the reopening, maybe a little more, and then close again for a few more months while the "tinker" with their new bells & whistles. Teatri degli Arcimboldi will continue to be used in the 2004-2005 season. I don't know when you will be able to count on attending something at the new LaScala. Keep watching .... you might manage something in Spring 2005. Good luck!
