Before we stayed there the first time I'd heard of someone else getting one, so early in our stay I asked. They asked what card we'd otherwise be using and when we showed them a UK debit card, said no. Maybe they do or did if you'd otherwise use a card with higher merchant fees. Although now they are so popular, maybe they don't any more.
