I'll be flying out of Boston to London on British Air. Does anyone know their policy on wooden knitting needles? Thank you.

BA DOES allow wooden knitting needles. (http://tinyurl.com/k4klr).

But their policy is secondary to the policy of the government responsible for security at your embarkation airport, who might impose more stringent standards.

On your return, Britain's CAA allows wooden needles. You - if some other poster doesn't do it for you - need to check on whether the US TSA will allow them on your flight out at Boston. If they don't, it really doesn't matter what BA thinks.

Yes they are "allowed" - but it is really up to the individual TSA screener. I have seen officially permitted items taken from passengers at security. You probably won't have any problems - but there is always a small chance they will be denied.

My wife had no problem with knitting needles from US to Greece, but the metal ones were taken when we were coming back. Yet our friends were able to take them from Greece. Depends on the nastiness of the inspector.

I took plastic needles in my carry-on from the US to Paris with no problems at all. The screeners for the return trip from Paris wouldn't allow them in carry-on. We were lucky that we were very early because they allowed me to put them in one of their plastic bags and check my knitting through. This was just a couple weeks ago.

I took my knitting from the US to London in March. Knitting needles are permitted by TSA, as noted above. On my return, I noticed a sign at Gatwick that listed prohibited items. Knitting needles were listed as prohibited. I was a bit stressed that I would lose my knitting but my carryon went through inspection with no problems.

In Dec 2005, I brought knitting needles from Us to London and London to Dublin, but they were not allowed from London to Us, so I packed them as there were signs everywhere warning of the prohibited items which included knitting needles, mine were wooden.
