question about bringing prescriptions and supplements into Greece

I take iron supplements every day. Will I be allowed to bring my iron pills to Greece without a prescripton? Does anyone know where I could find that information online?

Also, I am on antibiotics right now. I am going to bring the original bottle with the prescription info and my name on it. Do I also need a prescription written on a slip of paper? Thanks in advance for any help!

I flew Delta JFK to Athens a few weeks ago and was never asked about any of the medications I had with me. I was prepared with everything in a ziplock with prescription labels stuck on the bag in case I had to show it all. Security was nothing more than going thru the xray machine as usual - no pat down and my duffle was not opened. The whole process took only a few minutes - it took me longer to take off my shoes and put on a pair of socks to walk thru the scanner. I also had vitamins, calcium, motrin in baggies without labels.

Good morning Sunny16

I do not think you will have any problem with your iron pills. If it a special iron tablet prescribed by your doctor then carry in its own box with pharmacy label. I will try and find online inmforamtion but it will be in Greek. If I cannot find an alternative site I will translate for you.

Same with your antibiotics as with your iron tablets. Keep the pharamcy label on the box. Also, in Greece, most antibiotics are issued by pharamcies without a doctors prescrition. We are one of the few remaining EEC countries that allow pharmacist to dispence direct to the customer without having to visit a doctor for a prescription. If you need to buy more show the box to the pharmacist and he will help you with a further supply.

Lastly, codiene is banned in Greece so so do not bring painkillers that have that compound.

Hi

We have just returned from Turkey and Greece. We carried antibiotics, Lomotil, Ibuprofen, Thyroxin, "over the counter" pain killers and vitamins. For precription medication we had a letter from our physician confirming they were for our own use. Also we kept them in the original packaging. They were carried in our check in luggage. We were never questioned about them and we had no problems in either country.

Hi Sunny16

Here is the official declaration in English. You will find it at this site:

http://www.ausemb.gr/athn/medication.html

It now seems that codeine or any any drug with it can now be brought here provided it is covered by a doctor's prescription. So, I learn something new today.

Here we are unable to purchase codeine as it is a narcotic and I do know that in years before it was completly banned to be brought into Greece.
