Pineco,

Katikies Hotel is a bit closer to the center of the restaurants and stores, but the suites are really not that much further down the road. It will take you no more than a 5-6 minute walk to hit the beginning of all the stores.

I think you'll love either place, but I'm partial to the Suites cause they are brand new and the staff is so amazing! They bend over backwards.

The suites feature two rooms, jacuzzi and are large and spacious. But I think any room with a front view of the caldera and with a large enough terrace for 2 sand beds ( the lounge chairs) will be fine.

We had room 9 which is right off the pool. We had that room cause we were with our group of friends totaling 14 of us and my husband and I had them all over for drinks on the gigantic terrace.( I mean it was HUGE!) We also did not have to climb the stairs to get to get to pool. But you'll be climbing stairs no matter which room you choose to leave the property. Hope you are in good shape!!

On the other side of our room were rooms I believe 18 and 19 and although none of us had those rooms, they have individual outdoor jacuzzis and looked fab.

The smallest room that one our couples had was room 5. A very lovely room, very cute, but smaller than all of our other rooms. The advantage to it was it was close to the exiting the property, so less stair climbing was involved for them.

Be aware that some of the bathrooms are small ( no sink surface for cosmetics)and that the shower has a small space between the glass and the floor, hence water spilling out onto the floor. But where in Europe do you not encounter this, even at great hotels, so don't let it bother you.

If anything in your room needs work, don't hestitate to call for assistance. Since the property was redone so recently our front door was difficult to open and the sink stopper needed to be fixed. All solved by the very handsome engineer, Dimitris. In fact, I was thinking of things for him to fix because he was so handsome!!!

Each room is entirely different from the next. What one room has another won't.

Example: my husband and I had a very small TV in the living room. Our other friends had a large beautiful one. But we had drawer space and some of our friends did not. We had a fab living room, some of our friends had smaller sitting areas. One couple had fantastic modern art, other rooms had more traditional. One couple had the commode separate from the sink and shower and had a better door on it than we did. Some rooms have a fantastic chandelier. And on and on.

And find out if the property is sold out during your stay. If not, I am sure you can move to another room if you are unhappy with the first.

All in all a magnificent property; pure pampering, great location, you could not ask for better!!

Any more ???

A question for europhile, or anyone else who has been going to Katikies for a while: Have they significantly upgraded in the last few years? I was there in 1998, and absolutely loved it, but I would not call the accomodations luxurious. The luxury was in the views, the privacy, the pool, the feeling of being on a private island. But our room, which was a semi-suite, was very simple and a little rustic. As I said, I would go again in a heartbeat, but I have become very curious based on others' posts about the cost and the atmosphere as to what I would find.

rsb99- your assessment is right on in terms of where the luxury lies. The exclusivity of the place, coupled with the pampering service and the view. They have not noticably upgraded the rooms since I've been going (first in 2000, and most recently the past June). They have upgraded a bit in the public areas- with more plush lounge chairs and more high end menu items, and even the service has been "upgraded" to be a bit more formal (it was always excellent, but not always as polished as it has been recently). However, the actual rooms have not changed much at all in our experience. In fact, I think they could take a lesson from the Ritz Carlton (or even the Westin hotels) and get some plush beds. For the room rates you pay there, it would be nice to have a "heavenly bed." Still, at the end of the day I don't have any real complaints. It's an island experience, and I think it wouldn't be as unique and special if it became too much like a chain luxury hotel. We love that most of the staff are greek, and we love that the feeling is rustic without being threadbare.

Thanks for your response. I'm somewhat relieved to know it hasn't changed much. Recently I read Linda Ellerbee's book 'Take Big Bites', and in one section she spends some extended time in one of the traditional house hotels in Oia. She doesn't say which one, but her description matched my memories of Katikies perfectly-- it made me really anxious to go back!
