i'm far from expert, but the #1 vaporetto that goes on the Grand Canal is sure a lot of bang for the buck!

i do agree about researching restaurant and eating in advance, something i did not do and sure did not just stumble upon great places like i have in some other cities.

You're getting great (if sometimes conflicting) info here. The only thing I'd like to add is to suggest lunch at Corte Sconda (off the Riva degli Schiavoni) in the courtyard, under the vines with the sun filtering through with the house seafood appetizer plates. One of my very favorite dining treats anywhere.
