jogging in Paris
We will be in Paris for 5/10-5/22 staying on Ille St Louis. I can't imagine not exercizing for 2weeks. The island looks perfect for an early morning jog around the perimeter. Would this be acceptable and does anyone have a estimate of the distance?

Well i would not think the island itself a great venue but if you take the broad paths that go right along both sides of the Seine you will have miles of uninterrupted jogging - i have often jogged on these paths
Another neat jogging venue not far from Ile Saint Louis is the elevated garden path that goes from the Bastille to the Bois de Vincennes - an old elevated railway viaduct that now has trees planted along it and is a favorite of joggers.
Parisians flock to the Luxembourg Gardens to jog on its nice fine gravel paths and also to the Tuileries by the Louvre.
another venue within striking distance is the Bercy Park - you can take the Seine side paths to it and this newish expansive park in Paris' old wine warehouse district.
One problem for joggers with any asthma is the terrible foul air on weekdays due to lots of car exhausts and a natural inversion that can make the air here some of the worst in the world.
But there are many many joggers now in Paris
Happy trails to you...

I would think walking ten miles a day around Paris could be enough exercise, it seems that's often what I do. The lat thing on earth I need when on vacation is a special exercise regimen, especially one that would consist of jogging or something hard on your knees and legs. Anyway, have you been to Paris and seen the quais around the island? Because I'm not sure you even can jog around them, I thought they were only streets for cars around the edge of the island. Now I might be wrong as I wasn't thinking about wanting to jog around the island, but I thought they were for traffic and cars. Well, I know cars drive around there as I took a taxi once to the middle of the island and we drove around the quai until a place to get in to the main part. Maybe there is some space or ledge around there where you can job, I'm not sure, but you might be exposing yourself to a lot of exhaust and I think most people prefer a park for jogging.
Anyway, I'd guess it's around 2.5km around the entire island.

I think it's barely a mile around, and it would be a nerve-wracking jog, to say the least, as you'd be dodging cars and pedestrians all over. There are sidewalks all the way around, but they're narrow.
I'd go where the Parisians go - to the Parc Monceau or Luxembourg Gardens or the Tuileries.

My sister and I stayed once on the Island. I cannot recall our exact route but it was off the island, along the Seine and then through (and/or around?) the Jardin des Plantes. We developed a reasonable route around 4 miles or so with little foot or car traffic. Trial and error. For what it's worth, we run in the morning.

Also Palenque's route, "not far from Ile Saint Louis is the elevated garden path that goes from the Bastille to the Bois de Vincennes - an old elevated railway viaduct that now has trees planted along it and is a favorite of joggers," also sounds good. I'll be arriving in Paris the day after you leave, staying by Place des Vosges, so post away if you find something good in the 3.5-6 mile range.

The Jardin des Plantes - very close to Ile St Louis - is a very very popular jogging venue for Parisians - i always arrive in Paris at Austerlitz station opposite the park and inevitably when i am waiting for my train back out in the park packs of Parisian joggers pounce by - the fine gravel paths are perfect for jogging rather than hard asphalt - the part of the Left Bank of the Seine south from Notre Dame is also a very popular jogging venue - going thru the open-air statue park - again fine sandy paths - if you take this route you can jog over the new bridge over the Seine - a pedstrian bridge that takes you into the Bercy park with more fine hard=packed sandy paths - this whole route would be an outstanding one with nearly no vehicular traffic.

Good responses. Here's the tool you need: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/ It computes distances anywhere in the world. It shows that a lap around the Ile St. Louis is 1.39 kilometers, or 0.86 miles, not counting dodging cars, pedestrians, and dogs and their produit!
