It seems that Anzio is definitely worth a daytrip from Rome,
(this being my children's 2nd time there, and having an interst in WWII history )
BUT, has anyone actually gotten into the museum?
Most posters have said it has been closed when they went.
I think we will still go, but I can prepare the kids better if I have a better idea if the Museum is accessible.

We tried off and on for a week to get to that museum. First, we couldn't find it and no one could direct us to it (and it wasn't on the city map we procured) -it's off an alleyway that's not near much of anything else in town, and the only sign directing you to it is a tiny one, obscured by a hedge, about 20 yards from the building itself. When we did find it, it was closed the first day. Second day, it was open, but we couldn't go in because the woman at the front desk had some family emergency and was about to shut down and run home. Third day, closed again. There was no sign indicating some regular schedule of opening and closing times. There were some WWII artifacts strewn around the lawn in front of the building, so we looked at those for a few minutes and then gave up. It didn't strike me as a particularly serious effort at being a museum.

it was due to reading about your experiences with the museum ,
on this site , that prompted me to ask for any further input!
i figure if you couldn't get in over an extended period of time,
the chances of us getting in during a single morning period of time are slim

But, again, I appreciate your taking time to reply !!

The hours on their website do seem to be limited. Maybe call or email them before you go?

If you go to Anzio you might also try to visit the Sicily-Rome American WW2 cemetary and memorial at Nettuno , just east of Anzio.

The World War2 cemetary at Nettuno would be my primary reason for going to Anzio mentioned earlier by Jody.
It is walkable from Anzio-approx 1+ miles east.

I agree that the WWII cemetary is a must see. Actually, it is located outside of Nettuno and about 4 km from Anzio. So if you are going in the summer, it could be a hot walk. Better to take a bus or cab. If the lives of saints interest you, the church of Santa Maria Goretti in Nettuno should be visited to see her burial spot and the interesting museum dedicated to her in the church.

I had no idea it was walkable. It is on my list for our next trip to Rome as one of my uncles is buried there..well actually he was buried at sea but they, the BASs and MIAs are all memorialized there

As far as calling ahead for hours, I think we will just "do it"
taking the train down and if they are closed, taking the bus to Nettuno and try again on the way back.
Either way, it will be an adventure, and that is why we are going (yippee).
I know I could easily walk the 4 km. but do I want to schlep my children?
I think the whining in my ear would drive me nuts

If you take the local train and have some moxie, don't even bother to buy a ticket. We took that train six times and there was never a conductor on the train to check whether we had a ticket or not.
Oh, and check the train schedules carefully. The one posted at that trac nearest us in Livinio was three years old - we waited 2.5 hours for a train to Rome as a result.

not sure about that moxie thing !! each time I have been on a train,
I got "checked",
we did , by mistake board a bus in rome without tickets ,
our second day there!
Hopped off as soon as someone alerted us to what could happen, as the day before , I had met up with a friend, and her husband or cousin had gotten fined for no ticket
(if I remember correctly)
Being a sunday, we had to search very far and wide for an open tabacchi

As we will take the train from Rome, I think I will be able to get a better idea of schedule, but thanks for that warning.

Anzio/Nettuno will be a good daytrip for us
