Itinerary help pls

Hello all. I offered to help a friend with her italy itinerary but now i cant remember what i did 8 years ago and cant find no paper trail. so i am doing the next best thing, posting here.
13 days in italy to include
milan 1 day, rome 3 days, florence 3, venice 2days, and the amalfi coast (positano) 4. need to fly in and out of rome which throws a wrench in the plan as that involves back tracking. train travel mostly but if air is convenient that will work fine too. here's what i am thinking and ofcourse i am open to suggestions

Rome- train to sorrento ferry to amalfi
amalfi to venice thru naples train or flight?
venice to florence train
florence to milan train
milan to rome Eurostar Altovelocita (ESA)
Any help will be greatly appreciated. thanks

IMHO too many different places in way too few days - a lot of time spent just getting from one place to another. 6 places in 13 days is just too much.

Is Milan necessary?

And can you not do into Venice - or Naples - and out of Rome - to avoid backtrackig?

Do the 13 days include either/both the arrival and departure days?

I suggest they skip Milan and do something like this:

Day 1. Arrive Rome. Continue immediately to Salerno and ferry, bus or taxi to Amalfi.

Day 2. Amalfi
Day 3. Amalfi
Day 4. Amalfi

Day 5. Ferry, bus or taxi to Salerno and train (6.5 hours) to Venice

Day 6. Venice
Day 7. Venice

Day 8. Train Venice-Florence (2 hours)

Day 9. Florence
Day 10. Florence

Day 11. Train Florence-Rome (90 minutes)

Day 12. Rome
Day 13. Rome

Day 14. Fly home

If there's another day, add it to Rome.

Not much time anywhere, but they'd only be skipping Milan. FYI, in this plan seeing Pompeii would take the better part of one day, so hopefully Pompeii isn't a priority.

Just noticed your reference to Positano. Would they be staying in Positano or Amalfi?

If Positano, on Day 1 arrive Rome and continue immediately to Naples. Have a hired driver take them to Positano.

thanks for the replies. Jean, the trip is 13 days not including arrival/departure days. i suggested removing Milan too but apparently theres some fashion thing they wanna go to. Positano or Amalfi hasnt been decided yet. if i remember correctly, positano is easy to get in thru salerno and amalfi through naples? will Naples to FLorence and then florence to Venice work better. 6.5 hrs train is long. is flight a better option? thank u
