Itinerary Help for Italy

We are going to Italy in March. Here our our tentative plans. Any comments on this? We have been to Italy previously - Rome (which is why we are only staying there a limited amount of time) and points north.

Rome - Two nights

Naples - Three nights

Capri - One night (leave Naples early one morning, return to mainland late the next afternnon)

Sorrento - Two nights

Rome - one night so can arrive at airport early the next morning.

Time in Sorrento and Naples will include day trips to Pompeii, Herculaneum, Mt. Vesuvius, and Amalfi coast.

Hi, looks like fun! My only thought would be that unless you have a compelling reason, you might skip staying over night in Capri, and instead just go back to your hotel in Naples or head to your hotel in Sorrento. It would be one less day you'd need to pack up, and the hydrofoils take about 30 minutes, so it's easy to get back and forth to the island in one day. It's a beautiful island, but you can see it by going over in the morning and coming back in the early evening. (I LOVED Sorrento, so I'm a little biased about spending more time there!).

Happy travels,
Karen

k - Thank you for your input! In reading about Capri, it just seemed like there was more to do/see than a day trip would allow. Plus, we have found on the net a couple of not expensive hotels that look nice, with what appear to be good views, and we like islands.

Mike have you considered going directly to Naples on day of arrival and doing the Rome portion all at the end. Saves one time packing up and moving...just a thought.

I agree on Sorrento. I would cut a night out of Naples and even CApri and stay in Sorrento or one of the other small caostal towns. So much more picturesque. Don't know if you have time, but if you do, you should check out Ravello. Breathtaking views.

It really is easy to travel between Napoli, Capri and Sorrento, so there is no point in staying overnight in all three places. From Sorrento, ships take 45 minutes to Capri (fast craft 25 minutes) and fares are cheap, so you can go to Capri for a day trip or for a morning or an afternoon. I'd suggest staying in Sorrento rather than Napoli - the noise and heavy traffic is much worse than in Roma or northern Italian cities, while Sorrento is a pleasant town with frequent trains to Pompei and Napoli, and buses to the Amalfi coast.

There is no point staying overnight in Naples UNLESS you plan to do a lot of heavy-duty sightseeing there (there IS quite a lot to see in Naples, but that is another story). If you stay in Sorrento, you can easily take public transportation to Ercolano, Pompei, Capri, Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. You could also visit the Archeological Museum and the Capodimonte Museum in Naples as a day trip out of Sorrento. I also like Maddy's suggestion of going direct to Naples/Sorrento and leaving Rome for the end.
