Itinerary for 3 weeks in Germany & Austria - what do you think??
After spending much time researching this forum, I have come up with an itinerary for a 3 week trip to Germany and Austria. Now I need some experienced travellers to check it out for me...
We have travelled through Europe for 3 and a half months previously - this is our 2nd trip concentrating on the south of Germany and Austria.
We are a couple (ages 29 and 34) travelling with a 10 month old infant. Transport will be hire car all the way (easier with the baby). We want a sensible itinerary that allows for the realities of travelling with a baby.
What do you think about this itinerary(we are flying into Frankfurt and out of Vienna):
2 nights Frankfurt (to sleep & catch up with friends)
2 nights Rothenburg
3 nights Munich
3 nights Fussen
2 nights Berchtesgaden
3 nights Hallstatt
4 nights Vienna
I would appreciate some help with accommodation and sightseeing along the way.
We are seeking good quality accommodation with a price range of 70 to 100 euros per night - preferably a room with space for baby to move around and small kitchenette (even just bar fridge and microwave to heat baby food etc..). Location is very important - we would like to be able to return to our room during our day to feed/change our baby and then go out again without constantly driving/looking for parking.
Our preferences for sightseeing include castles, WW2 historical sights, architecture, alps and stunning scenery. We are not into long hikes or sporting activities. We love cosy cafes and restaurants, picturesque villages and shopping.
Any general suggestions, driving tips and hotel recommendations would be much appreciated.

It doesn't have a kitchenette, but a convenient place in the village of Hohenschwangau (where Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles are located) is

Good prices, includes breakfast and parking, within walking distance of ticket center.
This one has kitchenette apts, but it would be just a bit far to walk. A 5 minute drive from the ticket center. We didn't stay here, but we had a great dinner there one night, and the hotel looked clean and friendly.

We had a similar trip planned and opted for Bamberg over Fussen and are we ever gald we did. Bamberg was untouched during WWII bombing and remains a classic, medieval glimpse into Germany's past. A wonderful city, food, people with tons to hidden treasures and windy oldness.

I also think that 3 nights in Hallstatt is a bit much. It is not conveniently located to other sightseeing sights for you and the baby. Also, unless you want to take in the Zugspitze on the cable car from Leermoos, you might reduce your Fuessen stay to 2 nights. The castles and Die Wies (church near Steingaden), can easil be done in 1 or 1 1/2 days from Fuessen.
Spend an extra day in Berchtesgaden. The Koenigsee, Jenner, Kehlsteinhaus (Hitler's former teahouse, now a restaurant on top of the Kehlstein) are all worthwhile sights.
Otherwise, have you thought perhaps spending some time in Saalfelden or Zell am See and visiting Hallstatt from there, plus trips to the Saalbach valley, Grossglockner, Kaprun Glacier, and a cable car ride up to the Schmittenhoehe right out of Zell?
