Italy Honeymoon Help!

My fiance and I are planning a honeymoon to Italy for about 10 days in June. We were thinking of doing Rome, the Amalfi Coast and Capri or Cinque Terre and somewhere else. Someone suggested do Lake Como, the Amalfi coast, and maybe 2 days in rome. Do you think this would be too much? Just wanted to get a feel for what the difference between the trips would be and what people would recommend doing. Definitely need help with an itinerary! Thanks.

Anything's possible, but how much do you want to relax on your honeymoon?

With only 10 days and it being a honeymoon, I'd probably pick just two places. (Maybe three places if you go to the Amalfi Coast and want to spend a night or two on Capri.) I wouldn't pair Lake Como and the Amalfi Coast because you'll lose an entire day travelling between them. I wouldn't pair the Cinque Terre and the Amalfi Coast because of their similarities.

If Rome is one of your destinations, then fly into or out of another city closer to your other stop. Milan for Lake Como, Naples for the Amalfi Coast/Capri, Milan or Florence for the Cinque Terre.

P.S. Travelling between the Cinque Terre and the Amalfi Coast would also take 7-8 hours.

May I suggest
Cinque Terre or Lake Como 4
Capri or Amalfi 4

1 day to travel between

If you must go to Rome, stay 5 nights then go to Capri for 3.

I would choose more than 2 locations since it is your honeymoon.

I just spent 4 nights in Rome in Sept and then a couple in Naples. It wasn't my honeymoon, and I'd been to both places before. We were with some friends who had never been to Rome before and we felt we were able to see quite a bit in those 4 days. I highly recommend you hire a local guide for at least one or two days. We had a great woman, Suzie, take us through the Vatican, and Carmine Foggia take us on a day trip to the Amalfi coast from Naples (his website is seeamalficoast.com). Guides will save you time, teach you so much more about their city than you could ever learn by yourself, and usually bring you to restaurants that are off the beaten path. I have also been to Capri before, a great place for a honeymoon, I recommend the Hotel Luna and a restaurant called da Paolino. You could easily do 4 nights in Rome, 2 in Capri and 2 or 3 in Naples or Positano or Ravelo. If you stay in Naples, consider the Paradiso Hotel. The rooms are pretty basic, but the view is to die for.

you want opinions-- here are mine. just opinions. don't anyone flame me for tossing them out, please!!!

if romantic is what you're looking for, i would not go to como. it's beautiful to drive around, but not the best to walk around. cute-- but your time is very limited.

cinque terre is a time soaker-- you kind of have to commit to it. takes time to get there. awkward train schedules. can be difficult. however, it's very romantic.

if you like busy cities like new york, you will love rome (as i do.) plan to spend max time there. walking around at night and stumbling on gorgeous statues is fantastic. borghese park is so sweet. and the food....

capri is great but just brimming with tourists. it also takes a committment to get to, so if time is really limited, maybe just go to sorrento and the amalfi. they are all good choices.

one way to maximize time is to take a sleeper which can be great fun on a honeymoon. maybe from florence to naples (for the amalfi) and save travel time. have a late dinner, check into a first class sleeper (usually comes with champagne) and wake up at your new destination. it's an adventure.

if you do go to the amalfi coast, i would advise staying in sorrento and then doing a day trip to the amalfi. you won't want a car along the amalfi-- so it's really easier just to day trip in. i would highly recommend the minerva in sorrento. we stayed years ago, when it was a dive-- it's since been fixed up. but never have we had such a stunning sea view-- from our bed. very romantic.

have a great honeymoon!

I think that Lake Como is highly romantic....there are plenty of walks in the area and being able to potter from place to place on the ferry makes for a very laid back way of travelling....with all those stunning views.
Here's some general info...

and here's a list of walking, hiking, driving options....

It's also very easily accessibly from Milan by car or train.

I also think Lake Como is romantic. An overnight train IMO is not. Anyway, overnight service isn't offered on many routes anymore. It is available (with 1st class couchettes) on one train from Milan to Naples, but the train makes 4 interim stops including a wait of almost 6 hours at Orte. Not my idea of romantic.

hi fabmad,

for romance, and italy, you can't go wrong with Venice. yes it's touristy, yes it's expensive, but it's also beautiful, breath-taking, and sinking - all good reasons for going now!

After that, I would go to Verona [more romance with THAT balcony] and then lake garda - sirmone for example is lovely and you could relax by the lake and use the boats to get around.

finally back to venice, perhaps via Ravenna if you've got time. not too much travelling, no racing about, but lots to see.

Rome is of course stupendous, but June could be very warm [or wet!] and relaxing it is not. if that's what you decide on, i again suggest making your lives easy - fly into Rome, and immediately get the train to amalfi; after a week or so there, then get the train back to Rome. Don't try to do more than that - you'll regret it and you'll have loads to do in just those two places.

have a great time,

regards, ann

In 10 day - and for a honeymoon (assuming you don;t want a lot of 7 am starts and early nights) I would stick with 2 places. You need to decide if you want to see cities (Rome, Venice) or resorts (Amalfi Coast, Cinque Terre, the lakes) or one of each. To do more than 2 places would IMHO be a waste of time traveling and not give you any time to just sit, relax and enjoy life in italy.

I agree with kawh's comments and I would limit moving around so you actually have time to stop and smell the capuccino.

And personally I would not choose the CT or the AC as hey will be completely overrun with tourists as it always is during the warm weather months.

Many feel Venice is romantic but personally I am not a fan. But you should see for yourself if that is a city that appeals to you.

And I get bored in Lake Como and that area so it is really a matter of travel style.

My favorite areas are the Ligurian coast (now that's romantic to me), the Dolomites and Tuscany which will also be busy. I also really enjoy Rome but I was raised just outside of NYC and am a city girl at heart.

Are you going for art, history, architecture? What attracts you to Italy?

You could fly into Venice and spend 2-3 nights, then head to Tuscany and base either in Florence or in the countryside if you prefer smaller villages. You could end in Rome. That would be a typical Big Three first timer trip and it is a popular route for a reason.

You should fly open jaw no matter what you choose to do to save back tracking.

If you want more of a small town experience, take a look at Santa Margherita Ligure and Rapallo on the coast, drop dead gorgeous coast line and perfect IMO for a honeymoon. Combine that with one or max two other stops, all logistically practical, and limit your travel time.

Thanks everyone! Another few questions...

If we had 12 days do you think flying into venice, then rome, then amalfi coast would be too much?

also, any hotel suggestions in rome...looking to spend around 200-300 euro in rome...

and...Any hotel suggestions for ravello or positano....willing to splurge a little more than rome as we want to stay some place nice with a sea view....

Thanks a lot!

frankly, yes. the distances involved are such that you will lose nearly a day every time you move.

Two slightly different ideas:

from venice fly to Naples, then train back to Rome.

OR

scrap the amalfi, from Venice go to Lake Garda [beautiful and relaxing], then train to Florence or Rome.

<<looking to spend around 200-300 euro in rome...>>

there's a thread about Rome hotels at the moment; someone suggested the hotel raphael near the piazza navona, which has some rooms available within your budget, and a roof terrace to die for.

If you add in Venice (which I do think is Italy at its most romantic, then stick to the north: Venice, Lake Como or Garda and the Italian Riviera (take a look at Lerici, Portovenere and/or Camogli).

If you go to Rome, then the Amalfi Coast makes more sense.

Have a wonderful time!

Divide it between Rome and Venice IMO.

Fly into Rome and out of Venice. Various day trips by train or bus are possible from both places.

OR

Fly into Rome, spend a couple of days in CT then overnight (at least) and fly out of Pisa. DH and I made Pisa a base for travel to CT, Florence, Lucca, Siena and San Gim.

No mention made of Florence. Have you been there? Congrats!!!
