Is the Louvre open on Armistice Day (November 11th)?

Hello

My wife and I are going to be in Paris on Friday, November 11th, which is Armistice Day. We are wondering if most museums/shops are generally open on this day or not? Most importantly, we had planned to go the the Louvre on that day, but cannot find any information on whether or not it will be open.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Here is their official website...

http://www.louvre.fr/llv/commun/home...sp?bmLocale=en

They have a contact us section on their site where you can email them for information.

Armistice Day is a big deal in France, an official holiday--so I doubt that the Louvre or any other government-supported museums will be open. But check the Louvre web site.

I've just been to the Louvre website myself, all over it, and although there's a mention that the Louvre will be closed on 'certain' holidays, I don't see that anywhere it says which ones.

The Louvre is closed on all public holidays, and November 11 I'm quite sure is one of them.

I checked past history by googling the date, on some November 11ths it has been open, on others, closed

The Rodin Museum gardens are open on Nov.11 - at least in 03 and 04 - as was the cafe in the gardens. We didn't check the museum itself but I suspect it was also open.

Troyolson:

I researched this over the summer. I contacted, Paris- office de tourism.
They e-mailed me back & said they may
have limited hours at the Louvre but to check back in November.

It is a significant holiday. The area on the Champs d 'Elyees side will be crowded with people for the parade. The parade begins after the 'laying of the wreath' ceremony at the Arc d'triomphe.
This all begins late morning.

Enjoy & Regards,
Di

The Orsay is open on Nov 11 and, if I read the Louvre website correctly, it too is open on Nov. 11. Incongrously for a secular state, both are closed on Nov.1, All Saints Day.

Just realized a mistake - we visited the Roding Gardens in June 01, Nov 01, and Nov 04. We also visited in Feb 02 with the grandchildren. I guess we like Rodin. Nonetheless, the RodinGardens were open on the 11th both Novembers we visited.

The Louvre is not closed on all public holidays, it's open on many of them. I've been there when it was open on Bastille Day. It really varies from year to year as to when the major museums decide to close on some of these minor holidays (I don't think of Nov 11 as a major one--Christmas and New Years and Labor Day are the ones when most everything is closed). I think they may coordinate so that some are open and some not (that is speculation, just what I've noticed). They will probably post it on their website closer to the date, they usually do (I could see nowhere on the Louvre website where it mentioned that holiday).

However, there is a complete list of openings for Nov 11 on the Paris Tourist Information website, and as of now, they say every single major museum and monument in Paris will be open that day. The only ones closed this Nov. 11th are the Fondation Cartier, the Sewer thing (Egouts), the Magic Museum, the Henner Museum (never heard of it), and the Arc de Triomphe in the morning which is where they have a ceremony.

I would check on the Louve website closer to the date to make sure of that info.

Elaine, I went to one of the websites selling advance tickets to the Girodet exhibition. The site noted the Louvre was closed Tuesdays and Dec 25, 05 and Jan 1, 06.

Elaine, very good site and it does list holidays. If you check the Orsay entry it mentions the public holidays and includes Nov. 11. But check this official site for the Orsay and you will find by scrolling down that Nov 11 is specifically listed as an open day (along with Bastille Day).

Well, the Eyewitness Guide to Paris is wrong, then.

quelle surprise -- the Eyewitness Guide to Paris is wrong on all kinds of things, I would never trust them for facts. They are wrong about a lot of the metro/RER ticket stuff, as I recall. They can't get facts right and don't bother. They had some info in there on metro tickets that was from about 15 years ago, as I recall.
