Some years back when we were getting ready to book a rental car my husband observed that we were probably going to spend more time in the car than in our hotel room (except for sleeping) and ought to get a car comfortable enough for us not to get tired of driving. He was right, and ever since we've gotten cars that fit his philosophy. Our favorite car in England was actually a Fiat with a HUGE trunk and very cushy seats; we got that one by accident.

I've rented old minis twice--it's been over a decade--and never regretted it. It's hard enough for me judging distance from the left side of the car when I'm driving on the right--I appreciate the advantages of a smaller car on narrow town roads. On the highway I was fine.

Now that I'm almost 60, comfort might be more important for me, but I still value the low gas consumption and small size of the mini.
