Ipaq PDA Travel software options
Hi I am taking my new HPx4700 Ipac with me to Europe on a five week holiday (first time!) with my teenage children. Can anyone let me know what are some really good software programs I can download to my Pocket pc. Also anything else I can add that would make this a great asset while travelling. I am only a newbie to using this Ipaq. Definately not a tech guru!
thanks in advance.

I have a Palm, so I don't know for sure what's available for pocket pc, but I brought my Palm with a French-English dictionary, an all purpose converter (e.g., cm-inches, degrees centigrade-farenheit, kg-pounds, etc.), and Zagat to Go with restaurants installed. All were quite useful!

Here are my favorites:

Plus, all the pdf maps offered by city transport authorities (thetube.com, ratp.fr) will play on Acrobat Reader (adobe.com).

gingerpot, I'm also taking my hx4700 to Europe with me. Some of the programs I've found useful so far:
Tube: http://www.visualit.co.uk/tube.htm
Most major European cities available.
Adobe Acrobat Reader V2.0 for Pocket PC:
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readermain.html
Add some of the numerous maps and guides that are available for free download.
English-French Talking Phrasebook for Pocket PC:
http://www.beiks.com/PocketPC/showprod.asp?ProdID=391
Spanish, German, and Italian also available: http://www.beiks.com/PocketPC/category.asp?CatID=10
If there's any way for you to get a copy of Microsoft AutoRoute before you go (like Streets & Trips but for Europe), you can export your own Pocket Streets maps to take with you. Maps are sometimes available for download if you look long enough; the AutoRoute maps work with Pocket Streets from Streets & Trips also.
Games are always nice to have for those spare minutes in the train stations/airport terminals...your choice.
Also highly recommended: the Belkin USB Power Sync Travel Kit (Model F8Q2001); charge your hx4700 in the US, UK, Europe and Australia, or in your car from a 12V cigarette lighter/power port. Can also be used with anything else that can be charged with a USB cable(some MP3 players, for example).

One of the great little programs for PocketPC (or Palm) is Metro. It can help you with routing for public transportation for many major cities (including USA). I use it regularly to find my way around the NYC subway system.
You can find it here:

> Nota Bene: Microsoft AutoRoute only
> includes maps for the United Kingdom.
???
AutoRoute provides detailed street-level maps and address find capability for Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland (south-central only), Germany, Greece (Athens only), Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and United Kingdom (England, Scotland, and Wales); and urban areas of France, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and United Kingdom (Northern Ireland).
In addition, AutoRoute provides some street-level coverage, but does not support address find, for Channel Islands, Czech Republic, Ireland, Isle of Man, Liechtenstein, Monaco, San Marino, Slovakia, and Vatican City.

I have AutoRoute for PC, then transfer maps to my Clie (Palm O/S) with RepliGo (which I find, on Palm O/S anyway, far superior to any other program, including Adobe Reader even for pdf documents). With RepliGo any sort of document can be beautifully transferred to your PDA.
Highly recommend 2xCalc (for currency, temps, measurements, etc), UltraLingua language programs, and ThoughManager is unbelievely useful (packing lists, itinerary notes, restaurants, everything).
