lovetotravel2, there are many excellent recommendations here but if your daughter wants to be inspired by what is being done with today's materials and technology a trip to London should be on the agenda.

Norman Foster has four completed projects: the Great Court at the British Museum, City Hall, the Millenium Bridge and the Swiss Re Headquarters, affectionately known as the Gherkin. He is also the architect for the recently opened Grand Viaduc du Millau in France.

A little closer to home could mean a visit to Fort Worth. Within a half mile you can visit the Museum of Modern Art (Tadao Ando), the Amon Carter Museum (Philip Johnson) and the Kimbell Museum (Louis Kahn), my personal favorite. Very interesting how three architects designed buildings for the display of art.

Gothic cathedrals in general, especially those in the U.K. and particularly Wells Cathedral for its unusual interior design. The great English country houses too, such as Wilton House, Longleat, and above all Chatsworth.

For me, it's the 1900 Paris Art Nouveau.

lovetotravel2, I am interested in your thread as I too from the time I was a small girl wanted to be an architect. Did not happen unfortunatly. Good for you for encouraging her interest.

About 3 years ago I received a wonder ful book that I think your daughter might enjoy. The title is "The Worlds Greatest Buidlings" Masterpieces of Architecture and Engineering. It is part of the Time-Life Guides. ISBN 0-7370-0082-1 (hardcover). Consultant Editor: Trevor Howells. It might make a special present for her.

I hope your daughter follows her dreams. Happy New Year!
