Just back from Paris,my wife wants to know how safe was our inroom safe( the kind you plug in four digits ); I don't have an answer..

Most of them seem secure enough...but you should know hotels take no responsibility for anything that might be taken from them. If I'm traveling with something truly valuable (I usually don't) I insist on putting it in the hotel's own safe.

Hi jimi<BR> The inroom safe is sufficient to stop the casual thief, no more.

So if they're only to stop the casual thief, what does anyone keep in them - not money, traveler's checks, airline tickets, or passports???

In May in Paris I screwed up following directions for my inroom safe (jetlag-ha ha!)and naively imagined that a locksmith would have to be called. Pas de probleme, said the owner, who promptly opened it with a key. I trust the little 2 star hotel and did leave my passport, airline tix, etc., in it but would not leave expensive jewelry there anymore than I would travel with such.

I always leave everything in my room safe. Money, credit cards, passport, tickets... Nothing has ever disappeared. As a code I use my phone number.

So EP tell us your phone number, your next trip and what hotel you are staying in. OK? Thanks

Paranoia aside, you are fairly safe in leaving things in the room safe. I would venture to guess that you are more likely to be the victim of a pickpocket than a safecracker!
