In Stuttgart for one night, what to do, where to stay?
Hello all,
I will be in Stuttgart for just one Sunday night this November. We are touring the Porsche museum Monday morning as I have a love for Porsches and that's really the only reason we'll be in Stuttgart for the night on our short trip to Germany.
We'll be arriving in Stuttgart sometime early Sunday evening and I'm trying to find a good place to stay where we can hopefully end up within walking distance of something fun to do that Sunday night. I'm 24 years old and will be with 2 friends the same age. Is there any sort of "hip" type area that a couple of younger folk could enjoy on a Sunday evening? We'll likely end up just strolling around or stoping at a club or bar for some good German beer for the night, but where I don't know much about Stuttgart i'm not quite sure what area to stay in. Not real concerned about being too close to the Porsche museum as we'll have a car and can drive the next morning, but preferably somewhere not extremely far away.
We'll be leaving Stuttgart sometime mid-day after our Porsche tour Monday morning so really Sunday night is our only night to take in a little bit of Stuttgart, or possibly an hour or two the next day.
Do you have any recommendations of an area we might enjoy? Or any "must-visit" or "must-see" places that could be enjoyed on a Sunday evening? Or if we could end up in a hotel near a variety of things, that would be great too. I just don't want to end up picking a hotel that's 3 miles from anything to enjoy where we're on a limited schedule.
We're into rock music, dance-club type places are okay, finding an area with some cool shops that might be open during a Sunday evening would be great, but i don't expect much on a Sunday.
Thanks for any comments or suggestions. Your help is greatly appreciated.
thanks,
scott

Uh-oh, you're making a trip to Stuttgart for the Porsche museum? My partner and I are car people -- well he's a fanatic actually and a former Porsche owner-- and both the Mercedes and Porsche museums were high on our list. We spent about four hours at the Mercedes Museum with hand-held audios and it was great -- lots to see and to learn (even in our late stages of the game). Then we went to the Porsche museum. We entered and discovered it was free. We were in the "lobby" and looked at the seven or so Porsches and the five or six race car Porsches. We looked for the door or the stairs to the rest of the museum and couldn't find it. We went back the desk and asked. Seems that "lobby" was the total museum. It was nothing. I've probably been to half a dozen car museums in the world that had far better Porshe displays. I hope you are saying that you have a tour of the factory booked. In my opinion that is the only reason it would be worth the trip out to the outskirts of town to go there. What a huge disappointment that museum was.
But I would recommend the Mercedes museum highly.
Sorry, can't help you with your other questions, except that there is a rather lively area with a funny name --kind of the old town where more of the clubs and entertainment are. I'm sure someone can help you out with that.

We do actually have a tour booked of the factory. Yeah, i've read that the museum seems to contain at most 20 cars at any given time and itself is not all that exciting, but we do have a tour of the factory, which i should mention is not real easy to get put together. After searching the web and dropping a handful of emails i ended up calling Porsche Cars North America and the clued me in to the routine. We had to talk to a local dealer, fill out a tour request form, have the dealer fax that to Porsche North America who in turn sent a request to the factory to check on a tour and then faxed back down the chain to me a confirmation of the tour. Somewhat of a pain, but hopefully it'll work out to have been worth the time. Where i'm a huge Porsche fan i'm sure it will be, but the others accompanying me may not be as excited.

On sunday afternoon / evening mostly all shops are closed, just a few in the train station area are open, not a hit for shopping. Walk down the ?Koenigsstraße? which is the pedestrian area. Here You find a few bars where You can have a beer (or two). More typical are in these days the ?Besen?, which are little private wine bars. Aks at the hotel desk where to find one open.
Places to go and to find music, nice people, drinks: Comixs Bar, Travellers Club, Dixieland hall (Jazz), Boa (dance floor).
To have a few bars/clubs at one place go to the ?Bosch Areal?, about 10 min to walk, everyone will know.
Have fun
Gar
PS: As Patrick recommanded, the Mercedes-Benz Museum is worth to be visited when in Stuttgart.

Glad you booked the factory tour, sandkicker. That should make it worthwhile.
Oddly this summer we had booked a tour at the BMW factory in Munich. But a parts strike in eastern cities had forced a close down of the factory. WE were happy when we called and found out yes the tours were back on. But it ended up we took the tour even though the plant itself was not operating yet. The tour was basically, "now in this area you would normally see the painting machines working." "now in this area usually they would be fastening the body to the chassis with the robuts which of course arne't working". It was kind of a lost cause.
I'm sure you'll have much better luck.

Awesome, Thanks for all of the info Gargamel. Sounds like someplace near the Koenigsstraße or the Bosche Areal will be where we want to be.
Are you saying that all of those hotels you mentioned would be close to the Koenigsstraße and ~10 minutes from the Bosch Area?
thanks for the info.
