I believe Surfergirl is right that there wasn't a great view from Donna Rosa, but the food was tremendous. Mama and one of her daughters is in the kitchen while the other daughter (who studied in Texas for a while) was our server. I believe it is the girl's uncle who is the host (don't quite remember, lots of wine).

I tried my best to talk Italian with our server (although my best isn't all that good). We enjoyed our banter back and forth. At the end of the meal she invited me back into the kitchen to have my picture taken with her mom and sister. It was a great evening.

When I was in Positano we went to a restaurant that was right on the water and kind of far from the crowd. It had a great view. I don't remember the name but I remember how to get there.

At the bottom of Positano is the beach. When you're standing on the docks that take you to Capri and you look to your right (north) you'll see a old tower along the water. Find the pathway that will take you past the tower. Walk a couple of minutes and you'll find this great little restaurant that doesn't look like too much from the outside, but boy is the seafood fresh and delicious.

It's been about 8 years since I was there so I can't be sure it's still in existence. I was with a native and he loved this place so much we went back two more times.

If anyone else has tried (found) this place I'd like to know the name of it.

we went there a year ago and LOVED it. We entered the bar to the restaurant. The bar was called Music on the Rocks, I don't know if the restaurant had the same name but the seafood was out of this world. Plus, it was open air "hanging" over the beach. It was one of our favorite places.

I suggest Caffè Positano a beautiful restaurant located at the top of the hill where the view
is amazing. It is an authentic italian food restaurant!

La Sponda at Le Sireneuse is absolutely wonderful. It was one of the most romantic restaurants that I have ever been to. We were careful in ordering. We had half bottle of wine, salad and pasta. I think the bill was about $140. But it was magical.

I also agree with the other poster about Caffe Positano on one of the small balconies with a private table. This should be in your price range. It was charming and they greated us with complimentary champaigne when they found out we got married in Positano that morning.

La Sponda is where we went for lunch following our wedding. We had a very elegant lunch and dropped 270 euros! We did order a 100 euro bottle of champagne (it was our wedding..what the heck hu?) and had two antipasti, two primi and two secondi courses. I think we may have split dessert too. We ordered more food there than Caffe Positano plus the expensive bottle of champagne. It will probably be more than you care to spend but like the othe poster said....it was magical.....a wonderful view and exellent food/service.

My husband and I ate at both La Sponda and Dona Rosa during our honeymoon two years ago. La Sponda has a nice atmosphere, but the food at Dona Rosa was much better and the staff more friendly. Many people say that La Sponda is one of the most romantic places to dine. I didn't necessarily agree with this - it seemed a little uptight to me. We enjoyed our meal at Dona Rosa and plan to go back when we visit the area again this summer. Also Dona Rosa is probably more inline with what you'd like to spend. The drive up the mountain at night is beautiful - you see all the lights twinkling below and around you -now that's romantic!

We just got back from Positano, and I do envy the possibility of you heading to La Tagliata. The food is delicious...order the mixed antipasti--which contains the worlds lightest ricotta. Also ckickpeas sauteed with pancetta--why didn't i ever think of this. The pasta is good for the primi, but everyone is there for the meat. If you have room, which i highly suggest, order either the dessert sampler, or the ricotta e pere pie, which, is hands down the most delicious dessert i have ever had. dinner for 2, antipasti, pasta, meat and dessert, 66 euro, plus tip--including 2 litres of wine and the obligatory bottle of water. our transportation was free, just a tip.

if you want to eat anywhere on the beach, skip buco di bacco, and chez black, and head to covo di saraceni--decilicous gnocchi sorrentina. and drink tons of lacryma christi--montebernardo? i think that was the maker.
have a good time. take a day trip to ravello. you can skip capri--the best part is the boat ride there and back. 60 euro for 2. ciao.

Donna Rosa was the name of the grandmother. The mother and one daughter do the cooking, the other daughter serves, and the father helps out. A charming family serving terrific meals.
