You think Italian tourists wearing shorts in DC is bad....hold on everyone and get your smelling salts ready, 'cause you'll all be so disgusted, you might faint...in my town of Sacramento, there were, or this is so hard to write, some...FRENCH tourists wearing shorts!!!! What were they thinking!!! Yes, it was 105 degrees, but oh, my God, they were right next to the Capitol, and they were wearing shorts... I almost tapped them on the shoulder and told them ...in French...you are French men, you are supposed to be wearing black capris and most certainly not white (though dirty) tennis/athletic shoes! I wonder if they'll be allowed back in France?!?!?

Even worse, one of the young french man was wearing a tank top!!!
Do you think they got advise on how to "blend in"? of course, when they had problems ordering from Subway, that wouldn't give them away at all....by the way, I was really proud of the clerk, she was so helpful in getting their order...at first, I thought about going over and helping (french was my first language), but then they were doign okay, so I didn't. But then again, I also didn't know if I should speak to tourists who wore shorts and tank tops!

We were in Rome in June and a large population of people had on shorts, even a lot of Italians. I wouldn't worry about it at all. Wear what you will be comfortable in. Who cares if you look like a tourist (you are after all a tourist) but I don't think you will stick out at all. (not that I would wear one, but most people associate them with tourists)
And another observation is: 3/4 of the people we saw wear fanny packs were Italians, especially in Venice.

It is all fun and games until someone loses an eye. Those gypsies you are going to toy with, they will fleece you of your wallet, watch, jewelry in 5 seconds flat. I have seen it with my own eyes. It is nice to give advice about Rome, but Naples is a whole other world.
I just came back from Istanubl. I was walking to the pool at our hotel on Buyukada--where very few foreigners travel to. I spotted a guy wearing an orange baseball cap, Abercrombie t-shirt, and cargo shorts. I said, "Where
d you come from, Ohio?" He replied, "No, I'm from Michigan."

Fanny packs are just ugly no matter the nationality of the wearer.
I was in Italy in late June/early July during the brutal heatwave and wore linen pants and nice (no writing on 'em) t-shirts and sandals. Sure, I could have worn shorts (though I never do at home either) but I wasn't going to be all that much cooler.

Lyb – you don’t need to worry about it. I think we sent those three French men to Sacramento a couple of weeks ago. That was just a pit stop. They were supposed to continue on to Timbaktu with a lot less than shorts.
