Darn, and I thought I was "speshull"...I too have fallen on the it list of the Nigerians, however I just checked and the e-mail address Fodors has and it doesn't even work anymore, it was from years ago...I have just begun to be flooded with them over the last month or so....the only address I get them in is my work one which is travel related...so maybe they are getting us from other travel sites...

Here's a sample of one of the "we want to buy from your store" e-mails (I get one about every other day!) They must be fishing for something.

Hello,
I am a representative of a firm named suzzybreekstore.inc based in canada in which we have a store branch located in Lagos,Nigeria.
We are based on the importation of shoe accessories and we have thereby seen your products facinating and we will be intrested in making good enquiries of them.
We will like all order to be shipped directly to our store branch in Lagos,Nigeria. Our mode of payment will
be by CREDIT CARD.The courier service that will be prefered will be either UPS or DHL courier services.
We will want you to get back to us if you will be intrested in dealing with us so that we can send in our
orders asap.
Best Regards.
steve.

Strange, eh?

Rex,

My regular e-mail does not get Nigerian offers. On the other hand, it does get a lot of offers for pharmaceuticals at discounts and low interest mortgage offers. And copper.net does filter what they believe are porn sites--anything with photos will get flagged.

<<They must be fishing for something.>>

For starters, they are just fishing for valid e-mail addresse (i.e., no bounceback) - - and even greater "gain"... a reply from you.

I actually fear that these e-mails are not from naive stupid Nigerians, but rather suckered folks who do not realize how obviously bogus these e-mail messages are.

I suspect that there are places in the world where the idea of sending mass e-mails can be sold to desperate people as a "get rich quick" scheme. Someone may be shelling out $25 (a month's salary?) for the "opportunity" to "come use our computer" - - and "you could make thousands and thousands of dollars".

Organized crime is everywhere in the world, and the higher the desperation, the longer the lines of "willing" victims.

I fail to understand that analogy of putting your address right into your header on every post is like putting a sign in your back yard where only your guests can see. Fodor's is of course, open to all, and according to them thousands view that message daily that the poster has openly attached his email address to see. I consider that the same as putting it in my front yard. Well, no that isn't right either, as only a very, very tiny fraction of the number of people who have been exposed to that email address on Fodors will drive by my house in any given day. A sign in front of my house is a WHOLE LOT more private that a posting on Fodors.

There simply is no percentage for a spammer in paying people to peruse web sites looking for e-mail addresses and capturing them manually.

Therefore the fact that millions of people might see your address here is irrelevant. That would be like saying that because you live in a city of five million, that's the number of people who will see your sign.

What is relevant is the fact that the design of fodors.com unnecessarily exposes the addresses to programs that crawl the web automatically harvesting them. There is no valid analogy to signs on houses.

What am I missing here?

I post a lot. I DO NOT put my email address openly on every post. I DO NOT RECEIVE spam as a result.

Michael mentions he DOES post his email in his heading. Yet he complains that he DOES receive spam.

Isn't it obvious, that the fault lies in the person who posts his own email for all to see?

We can argue all you want whether or not someone might seek out addresses through this website by various methods. But it is hard for me to understand why anyone would think putting his own email address in every post for everyone to see might not make him MORE vulnerable to receiving spam than those who don't!

Sorry, end of story. Period!

I've been receiving spam a lot longer than I've been posting on Fodors. I actually get less now than I used to.

The complaint of the OP, which is the basis for the initiation of this thread - - isn't it clear that it is all moot, since Michael posted back in January (see my post way, way up) that he forgot... he also reveals this address on chowhound?

People who display their e-mail address get spam. So does almost anyone else who actually uses their e-mail address to contact virtually any other person.

Cast iron sinks.

All of a sudden since yesterday I am getting all this German spam, on my "real" email address, not the one revealed here. Any light to shed on that? Anyone else notice something similar?

Oh great, just what I need, Deutschland Uber Alles. I'm glad I can't understand a word of the subject line.
Thanks, Rex.

Here's more info on the German trojan that's going around. It was running rampant today on our corporate network.

Guten Abend, Marilyn. I received a German spam message today too.
from [email protected], with the following subject line: Schily ueber Deutschland. Thought it looked strange (is ueber a misspelling of uber?) and didn't open it. I'm on a Mac, which usually isn't infected by the worm du jour.

Ueber is how über is printed if your font doesn't have an umlaut.

Hey, Betsy! I wanna hear about the Italian villa!

All my German spam is coming from different addresses. From what I've read, the original worm infected computers and can send spam from them, so we're getting that spam.

However, I just got an email from another fodorite saying she received something with a suspicious subject line from me that I did not send. Ugh.
