We thought 99% of the Belgians we encountered were a warm, helpful, and generous people. They were genuinely delighted that we were visiting their country.

Although they do have that serial killer problem.

There is currently a link on the side of this Fodors page under "Other News" to the Travelfreak blog that started this thread. I hope we're not responsible for elevating the writer's rep.

I'm sure you are. It's just another way Fodor's uses our posts.
I enjoyed the thread, though!

Im guessing people need to rethink their bias against us Americans . Three of us saved a lot of your European lives this week on a train. Your Welcome, I am guessing they had running shoes on also.

Mical1965, Thanks for demonstrating the arrogance of some Americans. You did not save those European lives so why should I thank you and show appreciation towards you? Would you have done the same had you been in that situation?

Americans are great at marketing themselves. The best marketers in the world. The problem is when they believe the hype themselves.

klee: >>Americans are great at marketing themselves.<<

Anyone know WTF that even means? So it's OK to individualize American behavior when three of them act bravely in the face of terrorists, but it's also OK to group American behavior when it suits your purposes?

Got it.

Just returned from Germany and a week in Paris. I was amused by the amount of neon running shoes on people's feet that were European. Everywhere you look there are Nike stores or sporting stores with theses brands. Big white ones on their feet also. Kids all had tee shirts on with American sayings. My father is Earl? What does that mean? I was asked for directions three times by people who spoke French. We had to help two people figure out their train stops and find their seat on the ICE train. We aren't ugly Americans. We kept our voices low. The three French ladies next to us in one restaurant were very loud, coughing all over us. Yuck. I saw a bit of everything and only one women that looked very chic imo. Baseball caps with NYC are the biggie among boys. I like the shortie boots but the wedged tennis shoes are ugly.

I love rock n' roll
So put another dime in the jukebox, baby
I love rock n' roll
So come an' take your time an' dance with me

... same old song, and when somebody puts a dime in the jukebox, we get it all over again.

When I was a kid, we had the contest of who has the biggest... well actually, no we hadn't. But some had. And still have.

I just hate the stereotypes. We don't walk around with big fanny packs and droopy arse pants so knock it off. I think what annoyed me the most were the dang selfie sticks but only saw them with one nationality. Sat in a park watching all the posing with them. My husband bought a cuban and we sat so far enough away so he could smoke it. Only time we were approached but the clipboard guys this time. A big puff of smoke and a Non and they were off.

'Three of us saved a lot of your European lives this week on a train.'

far from me the idea of creating a polemic (really, not my style) but ...
Where is the Brit in your rant ? Not being US means he doesn't count ?

Excellent point, Pariswat! Several MEN stood and did what needed to be done. End of that story. Who gives a s#@t about their nationality?! I'd be honored to shake the hand of anyone with that much courage and presence of mind; I don't care if he is wearing Nikes, a fanny pack, or a turban.

Jean-Hugues Anglade broke the emergency glass to sound an alarm, and in so doing suffered a small cut on his hand but single handedly protected French national honor.

So, of course your responding post is profound insight, and not who has the biggest. Right.

>>far from me the idea of creating a polemic (really, not my style) <<

Nor is self awareness.
