There is a metro station at Villette - you can just take the train back

We took the metro to Parc de la Villette and took the canal cruise from there to the dock at Musee d'Orsay.

Your cruise guide will point you in the right direction -- the name of the stop we used is Porte de Pantin I think. In any case there is a stop closer to where the boat drops you off that the Villette one.

Fran: Everyone's right! You can take the canal ride with Canauxrama in either direction, from Bastille area or from Parc de la Villette. If you end up in Parc de la Villette, there are actually two different Metro stations/line available (Porte de la Villette (Line 7) and Porte de Pantain (Line 5) you could use, the the boat guide will be happy to direct you to them, and there are also maps throughout the park.

How long is the canal ride? Does it run in October?

This may be more of a hike than you want to tackle but the walk along the banks of Canal St. Martin from Parc de Villette to Place de la Republique is a wonderful walk through some less visited neighborhoods of Paris. Two years ago,I walked up to Parc de Villette and took the metro back. This year (next month) I plan to take the boat up and walk back. There are several good cafes along the way.
